Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Quick update: I created a custom wiring harness for the ignition module and tried that. No difference - not really a surprise but at least the wiring is completely ruled out. At this point I think the most likely thing is that the timing chain has slipped/jumped or else I have one or more bad...

1991 185 Bow Rider no power to instrument panel

Get a cheap multimeter and attach a long wire on the black lead and connect it to the battery ground. Then start at the positive terminal of the battery and work your way along with the red lead starting from the positive terminal of the battery towards the fuse block that is under the helm...

Can't get the port engine to fire

I would grab a can of starting fluid (in Canada we have something called Motomaster Quick start) that is basically a highly flammable spray. Spray it into the carb as you try to start it. If that works, then it might be a fuel supply issue. If that does not help, then a fuel issue is less...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Thanks.. I'm about out of ideas as well. :( It's Thunderbolt IV, not V, so there is no base timing wire or knock sensor. Using a timing light, I was able to see the timing advance as I rev it up, so I don't think that is the issue.

    Question regarding depth finder installation

For your info.. My 170BR did not have the optional depth giage installed when I bought it. I picked this one up: https://www.amazon.com/HawkEye-DT1B-DepthTrax-1B/dp/B000JEOEE0 It works amazingly well, and shoots through the hull no problem. It says to mount it in epoxy, but i simply placed it...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

I agree.. my obsession with the missed flashes on the timing light may be misdirected. An interesting point is that after the hydrolock and after my "rebuild", there have been times when it ran quite well... both at idle and up to about 1800 RPM. (at first it only had problems starting at...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

My "top end rebuild" involved removing the distributor, carb, and intake manifold, exhaust manifolds & risers, rebuilding the carb, and then reinstalling and sealing all of the above. Did not pull the valve covers or heads. Sorry for the confusion. All of that work was successful in fixing the...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

I have not taken off the valve covers and inspected the valves since the hydrolock. Good idea to check this. Will do that next. Just curious.. would bad valves explain the missing pulses seen with the timing light?

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Here is a video of the boat in the water, taken about a month ago. At this point it was idling smooth and we got it to about 1500RPM before the backfiring started. The current status is worse. At present idle is rough and it starts backfiring with any throttle at all.

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Yep.. I grounded it to a ground rail that is directly connected to the main engine ground. I cleaned all the connections at the time. EDIT: Slight correction - The sensor is grounded directly to the engine block ground (as per the instructions). The ignition module is grounded to a ground rail...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Yep, I have replaced the ignition sensor (inside the distributor). The old one was rusty and I was really hopeful that was the problem. The new one is sealed as you mention and looks like a much better design. However it did not improve things at all . In summary, I have replaced the coil...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Ferris - I have already checked all cinnections and cleaned up all contact points. I'm going to try replacing some of the wires and see if that helps. It's possible the wire from the sensor to the ignition module or ignition module to coil is corroded

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Hi Bill - Thanks for the idea. I took the cap off and used a ratchet to crank the engine so the rotor moves all the way along. I noticed the timing mark lines up on the flywheel at 2 different points in the rotor cycle which are 180 degrees opposite. The wires were correctly arranged 165432...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Hi All.. sorry for delay in getting back to this.. the Fiance gave me a speech about how much time I was spending "fussing" with the boat.... :( I have taken it out a couple times in the last week and just putted around at idle (just far enough into the lake to open the cooler and crank the...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Thanks for the ideas guys! Here is some further info on all the points mentioned. (in order). I'm busy today but I will be back at the boat tommorow to check on all the items that need more investigation. Espos4 1) I did not noticed any sideways play in the shaft while I was adjusting timing...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

One obvious thing I forget to mention.. I've also changed the plugs twice.. once at spring commissioning (Champion RV8C), and then again last week when I did the wires/cap/rotor (NGK BFR6S). Gap was set to spec of 0.035

    Going for swim ..... anyone?

In addition to the very good advice of having a lifejacket on and a secure line (tied to you, not held in your hand) I would add that you should have someone watching you while you do it. If you get in trouble or pass out they could pull you in with the line. Make sure they would be able to...

Head-scratcher Ignition problem on 4.3L... Help please?

Hi guys.. newbie here. I picked up a 170 BR last summer and have been enjoying it greatly. Ran like a dream for the first season. Did the winterization myself with help from youtube. Starting from spring fire-up I've had nothing but problems.. At first it was hydrolocked which was puzzling...
