Doug - Thanks for the quick response (again). I wish I had known Saturday that it was that simple. But as I said, I had never done that before and I didn't want to just start dismantling the engine without knowing how complex it would be to reassemble.

Thanks for the quick reply and to any others: I apologize for the long-winded question. I wrote it in an Ambien-induced semi-haze last night. Essentially I want to replace the lower v-belt (see picture below), but cannot get the existing belt out from between the two large pulleys on...
QUESTION ABOUT: Vexing problem changing v-belt on 1994 454CID engine - belt can't be removed from between main engine pulleys - NEED HELP, please
I discovered that the intolerable screeching noise coming from the engine portion of the bilge was slipping v-belts. And I don' think I've seen a...
Thanks for the info. I haven't been back to the boat since I got the fluid, so I'll try what you said, especially about the "few drops". I had expected it would take a little more than that. IIRC, the manual says to fill until you can see the fluid a 1/4" from the top of the fill neck. I...
Try this link for fluid (I've ordered a pint
Regarding my previous response about the H-5605-A requirement, try this link for the hydraulic steering fluid:

Good luck

You are correct about that location being the fill and vent. Owners Manual Chapter 3 says use hydraulic oil meeting Mil Spec H-5606A and fill to within 1/2" of filler hole.
On mine I don't think I can see down a half inch. Please post your results if you can. Good luck.
I was asking myself the same question a few weeks ago (for similar symptoms, about which more later). Based on my research - and subsequent installations, both the engine mounted fuel filters and the ones mounted on the outboard side of the fuel switch panel require the same part. My info is...
Well, I'll play Devil's Advocate on this one. First, the bilge pumps may not have activated even with new batteries because the switch had become faulty over the years. But it's more likely that they activated for a while and pumped continuously until the motors burned up. It happens a lot -...
NEW PLAN:
Remove the whatever-it-is fuel filter currently installed and its mounting bracket and replace with Sierra mounting bracket for either the official Mercruiser filters that are used everywhere else or their Sierra equivalents. This filter is for the Quicksilver genset, so I don't...
Thanks to all for the information. I found this weekend that the 2 fuel filters behind the fuel crossover manifold valves can (and were) replaced by the same Mercruiser fuel filters for the engine mounted filter.
BTW, I'm relative sure, based on how the mounts for these filters were...

According to the 2020 Powerboat Guide, the 400EC is "built on a deep-V hull with a solid fiberglass bottom. . .
A huge market success, Mercury 340hp inboards cruise
at 18 knots (mid 20s top), and Cat 340hp diesels cruise in the mid
20s (28–29 knots top)."
Good luck!
Thanks, Greg. She's almost all healed now. Fortunately, the only semi-permanent damage was a broken nose, but it healed straight, so no plastic surgery needed. She was in pain for a few days, but her primary care doc gave her some strong pain medication with a stern warning to take it only as...
Mark - You are correct, sir, Thanks for the response and the info. I do have one of those and I'll look for the canister that it requires.
My question is about the two fuel filters behind the fuel crossover valves. There's a picture of one of them below (obviously oriented incorrectly in...
Guys, esp. Greg, thanks for the great input. I made it to the boat on Saturday, but as my wife was boarding from the dock, she lost her footing and fell back onto the dock. Unfortunately, she broke the fall with her face. After a trip to the local ER and and diagnosis of a broken nose, we...
So, I've decided the wx at the boat is good enough to go there later today or tomorrow and see whether I can discover the source and nature of the problem. I'll reply again when I know more.
Thanks for all the ideas. Greg, you're correct, it's not certain that the hose is the source, but I...
Thanks, guys, for the quick responses. Mark is correct. It is the fwd bilge in the eng compartment. Between the 2 center stringers and the hose is projecting from the bulkhead at the forward end of the bilge. Also correct about the steps from the cockpit. I also guessed the shower sump, but...
Hey, guys -
Anybody know what's on the other end of this hose projecting thru the forward bilge bulkhead? I just visited the boat this week and noticed what appears to be oil apparently leaking from the hose in the pic. I can't imagine what it could be, particularly since it seems it's the...
Is this post for real? When exactly did the boat sink and when was it salvaged? First off, the 2020 PowerBoat Guide has the diesels at low retail of $91 large and high retail of $110 large, What was the surveyor's estimate of current market value?
Second, the current owner is clearly having...
