Boat Info
2007 340 sea ray sundancer
Engines
8.1l
I have the kohler 5ecd on my 07 340 da
40 hours on the generator
Since owning the boat I’ve used the generator for maybe 5 minutes total run for a few seconds and shuts off and I get the UU code
I’ve replaced the fuel module
Both sets of coils plugs and wires
Cleaned the injector seemed to be good spray pattern
Bleed the fuel lines
Still fires up and dies right away
Any suggestions on where to look next ?
Heard maybe some sensors ? no idea where to look
Also looked over the wiring and there’s one harness with nothing plugged into it resting against the exhaust metal pipe
Help !!!!!!

Are you sure the seacock is open and cooling water is flowing?

Seacocks open replaced impeller this morning just cause
Should add that I’ve replaced the fuel cooler I guess it is and not the low fuel pump
When bleeding system there seems to be tons of fuel
Can’t get it to run long enough to see if water is flowing
Can definitely hear water in the system moving after it dies

Today the mechanic bypassed water flow sensors and didn’t solve anything
To date
I’ve replaced
Plugs
Coils
Wires
High and low pressure fuel pumps
Injector
Impeller
Anyone have any other thoughts ?

Test compression. Report back.

It sounds like you've already checked your fuel pumps but have you verified 38 to 45 PSI static at the Schrader?

I haven’t check fuel pressure assuming it’s good if both pumps are new

I’ll buy a gauge and double check this week

Fuel pressure is very critical and I suspect you'll probably have a hard time finding a tester that will fit on that Schrader in its location.

I wound up using a lock on tire truck and some various plumbing fittings to make something work.

If your pressure is good and you're still having issues a valve adjustment may help

The electronics, especially the voltage regulator, can cause an immediate shutdown.
Starting or shutting down a genny with load will fry the voltage regulator.

The voltage regulator has been swapped with a working generator and didn’t help

uu is almost always a stall condition if it happens immediately after crank disconnect. Almost always fuel or engine power issue

The quick shut down screams protection mode to me, but what are we losing (spark or fuel) and why?
Being a 2007 does it not have some kind of panel with a read out?

I had the same issue with mine. It was the ecu. It’s a black box mounted on the rear of the gen. Part alone was about 1k

I don’t remember exactly which wire it was. But my gen guy showed me. If you ground one of the white wires on the front of the gen at crank it bypasses all safety’s and if she runs it’s the ecu. He did and she ran great. I didn’t want to run with out and safety. One I got the new ecu she’s been all good. Best of luck

We had sort of the same issue. Ours was, genny would not turn off with out removing one of the fuses. There are certain lights on that board that need to be on/off that indicate the safety switches are working properly.
Pulled this out of my service diary:
July 2020 – Genny would run for short period and then cut off. This happened last year as well. Removed carb and cleaned. Helped for a brief period. Ordered new carb. Replaced fuel filter (mercruiser on bulkhead), spark plugs (2) and carb. Restarted and ran for 3 hours – went for run to Leonardtown and back and let genny run at pier for bout 1.5 hours after returning. Did fine. When attempting to turn it off, the stop switch in the cabin nor on the genny would shut it down. Changed a relay in the control box and this did not help. Used the trouble shooter in the Kohler Service manual and it looks like the K4 relay is not energizing and shutting down the genny. I can turn it off by shutting down the battery feed at either fused location. Ordered new Control Board and installed. STOP function now works and all fail safe cutoffs tested good. Ran genny for a few hours and did well. Will report how it did on Chesapeake Trip after we get home.

You can also disconnect the sensor wires or ground all of them as the sensor are activated by either adding or taking away the ground. Can't remember which when I did it. I believe there are 3 of them. Temp, water flow and oil. Just need to manually keep watch on the temp, water flow and know your oil level is sufficient.

I also have my old board, saved it for just this reason, someone needing one to r/o and issue with their board w/o buying a new one blind. The board will allow the genny to start, but none of the safety turn offs will shut it down, so you need to check the oil to make sure it is good, check the water flow to make sure you have good exhaust flow. To shut down, you will need to take away any load and remove one of the twist in fuses on the front of the black controller box.

If you do not have the 5E service manual, I have that as well and can email it to you if you pm me an address. It takes you through varies tests to diagnose what exactly needs to be repaired.

If you are in the states and would like to barrow my test board, PM me and I will UPS it to you.

Also - here is a couple of good contact numbers for you:
Kohler - New Jersey Branch at 973-835-9800 and ask for Jason Wechsler for Kohler technical support and Debbie Desrumeaux for Kohler parts at 973-835-9800.

Mines a 5ecd
Not sure it’s the same
Fuel injected
I’ll take a look at the 5e manual online and check out the trouble shooting section
Thanks

Start with fuel and compression.

The only time I had an error (don't know if it was UU) on my 5ecd was the heat exchanger completely filled with salt. Are you in salt water? Once you get it fixed, USE IT!! Genny's are meant to run.
