1986 340 Onan Generator wont start.

I have an Onan Generator that will run for a couple of seconds, and then shuts off. We replaced the electric choke this year, but this has not fixed the problem. Someone told me that they think the float is stuck in the down position and is flooding it out, but I do not smell excess gas. Any suggestions?

Check oil level, they have a safety switch if oil level gets too low, shuts down. Could also be a plugged / restricted fuel filter.
Pull a spark plug out and see if it's wet with gas.

Is it The 6.5 MCCK model? IF so sounds like its not getting fuel Also check that the fuel pump is working it should be electric i had an intermittent problem with mine and had to change it when's the last time you changed the fuel filter? Hope this helps you

IF it starts and runs until you release the start switch, one of your sensors has failed. When you press start, the sensors are automatically by-passed to allow you to start the genny. If you by-pass them manually, start up the generator and remove your by-pass jumpers one by one to locate the culpert. The other way is to check each one for continuity while the generator is cold and not running. They should all be n.c. Have you checked your impeller lately?
