im looking to replace the deck lights mounted on the gunnels they are shot im having no luck finding a replacement that looks even close any ideas where to look or a close fit replacement

Are you referring to the "Nav" lights? You mentioned light"s" (plural) so does that mean you have one light on the port side and one on the stbd side?
Go to Perko's website... Attwood's website... those are probably the two biggest players for this. Look through all of their products. You might get lucky and find they still have an exact replacement... or, at 30 years old, you might not. In that case, just look for something close - it's not hard to adapt. Innovative lighting is another one to look at (although they would definitely not have been the original).
Consider LED's.
