I still have the original manifolds / risers. over the winter layover I would like to have them changed as I have the feeling like I have a ticking timebomb. ive seen a few all inclusive kits on ebay for about $550. does somebody have a recommended replacement kit they have used?

I believe in saving money but, not on aftermarket exhaust manifolds.
I like Nuwave Marine for OEM manifolds, elbows, gaskets.

IMO, you'd be replacing a ticking time bomb with another ticking time bomb. OEM Mercruiser Parts Only.

lighthouse marine at has merc manifolds there on long island if your local are you fwc
thanks. will price it out with them and maybe take a ride out to save on freight. waiting to get a quote from my boatyard to compare

so sierra is OEM merc right? I saw the 7.4 lit for $624 not bad
didn't know they were all the way out in riverhead... will have to plan on doing a whirlwind visit to all my long island friends

Sierra is Sierra, not Mercruiser. There's times when it's safe to get aftermarket manifolds/risers (anything other than Merc), but I wouldn't risk it in this case. I have yet to see another brand be of the same quality as Merc. Ask yourself this... you have Mercruiser stuff on your engine right now, right? And... how long have they lasted? :)

I agree %100 , just trying to nail down the right parts

domer, are you SURE they are original, from 1995? Unless this boat lived in fresh water it's whole life, that's not likely possible. In salt water the time bomb starts ticking the day you install new components and keeps ticking for about 7-10 seasons before the bomb goes off!

Save money by doing it yourself, not by purchasing crappy aftermarket stuff. And that's not a snobby attitude to take. There are real life stories of early failure of Osco, Barr and others.

don't get me wrong .. im not trying to justify junk parts. im not willing to take that risk. since ive had the boat a couple of different mechanics have commented that they are original. mechanics from two different places that would never know each other. iva attached a pic that may illustrate. no major rust showing or any cooling issues , but 1995 is a long time ago. im just looking for the best deal on OEM units. just having trouble finding exact matches for my application.

if your freshwater cooled??? you probably can keep your manifolds and just replace the risers. when ou open them up check out the condition

yes im FWC, that's good , it will take much of the sting out of the bill! now will have to just source the correct parts
from the outside the maifolds look to be in good shape , no visible flaking / corrosion

so one last question... the problem related to failure... is this pretty much with the risers? or do the manifolds play a crucial part. the manifolds themselves look pretty good , so if I can just replace risers for piece of mind , will that be a good insurance policy?

MOST times the gasket that separates the manifold from the riser OR the gasket that separates the riser from the elbow fails, allowing sea water to drip down INSIDE the exhaust passages. If the mating surfaces of these components are clean, flat and not pitted or corroded, as gasket replacement would re-seal these joints. When I had 7.4s I would change those gaskets every other year. they're about $9 each. It's a pain but it's good practice to help prevent catastrophic failure.
