1998 SR 290 Sundancer - Little Ducky II

It was very hot and pegged the temp gauge w/o alarm and then shut down.

I was about 3800 RPM and just noticed all the gauges went to zero.

Opened the hatch and just smelled oil and gas with some smoke out the top.

damn, sorry. Hope she’s back healthy for you soon

Well looks like the fixer-upper is getting a new engine.

This answers the question. How do you get a new 1998 boat in 2020? One piece at a time. :(

I still love the boat.

Ugh, so sorry to hear that. What was the failure?

damn, sorry. We did one engine in our 290 as well - it sounds like the boat works for you so its worth it in the long run. Rebuild or short/long block?

Deposit taken...... engine ordered.

Had 2 estimates...... One just to replace the heads that were cracked and another to replace the engine. They came in pretty close to each other just in parts believe it or not.

So.... after some discussions, the cost of labor and the cooked engine having 900 hours on the clock ... it was decided to go new. Very little parts will be swapped over from the old and I'll be back in business.

very nice, where'd you get the new engine from?

Has anyone got first hand information of swapping from 4.3's to 5.7's? Engines are carbed, Not sure if it would be a big deal considering that the 290's came with the SBC option.... I am aware of the outdrive ratio being different (1:47 I believe)..... Just trying to weigh my options.... Never been happy with the 4.3's.... it works, but seems a bit underpowered.......

TIA

The new heart.

Now get in the dam boat already. ;)

Since the boat will be coming out of the water some time this winter I decided to winterize the generator and AC unit along with the fresh water system which I do normally. I purchased a SeaFlush device a year or so ago and never used it until now. It worked pretty well.

It barely fit on the generator strainer since it's so high up in the engine compartment once installed it came pretty close to the underside of the floor but It worked well as a big funnel to get some antifreeze into the generator within a few revolutions of the motor.

The AC system was pretty simple using the shop vac on "blow" to push antifreeze through the system to the thru hull. All though I did this all by myself a second person would have come in handy. I really didn't believe I was pushing antifreeze out the thru hull so I set up my phone to record a video to be sure.

Engine out, New engine is being prepped and built. If no set backs it should be done by Friday. :)

Decided to park my DIY skills and gave them the thumbs up to tune up the Starboard Engine while they are in there so both will be ready to rock and roll once the boat is back in the water.

Boat is back together and ready for relaunch.

Because of the current weather relaunch is going to be tomorrow along with a good sea trial to make sure everything is running correctly.

A bit of news:

I've been after them for a good diagnosis on why this happened. They first said the impeller could have failed but when they went to change it the impeller was in good shape. Both were changed just to be on the safe side since the last time they were serviced was back in 2012.

So then they went to fire up the new engine and it would not stay running. Found the engine control module was dead. Once replaced the engine fired off and runs great. So now they think the ECM died when I was cruising at 4000 RPM and sucked water back through the exhaust when it shut down abruptly.

Thoughts?
