Thanks, I watched some YouTube videos on how to replace these last night. Seems straight forward and I now understand the 2 filter configuration better. Good tip on the one gallon of diesel.

I also watched some videos on changing the oil. Oh man, 5 gallon buckets, I bet that makes for some interesting trips out of the bilge and onto the dock carrying a 5 gallon bucket of oil with you. Wondering how often that falls into the water.

a buddy of mine spilled 10 gallons on the dock years ago, somehow nothing made it into the water but it was a nightmare to clean up

another comment on the oil. Yes, it is a lot of volume but does the boat have a reverso? I can change all 14 or so gallons of oil in less time than it took for one of the 350's in our 290

Yes, it does. Watched a guy do in in 33 minutes on YouTube per engine. I dreaded changing the oil in my twin 454s. I had a nice battery opiated pump as well, that small tube thru the dipstick is ridiculous.

With my jabsco bucket pump, easy to do both 454’s in under an hour…. I guess it depends on the pump

Maybe it's because his pump is "opiated".

I don’t use 5 gallon buckets anymore for the used oil pumped out by the reverso. My marina has a large oil recycle tank so I bought one 6 gallon gas container, hard to find in stores but easy online. Plenty of room in there for one engine change and spills are no worry. If you have to transport off site, consider buying two.

I have the Jabsco as well, just sitting in my garage right now. No matter how much I warmed up the engines it seemed like forever for that thing to pump them out. I never timed it though, so maybe it was about an hour for both.

I have the upgraded one with the reversible switch, did yours? I can pump my 454 dry in 3 mins or less….

Dang...which one do you have? I thought I bought a nice pump a few years back but she's just getting started at the 3 minute mark!

Jabsco makes 2 of them, the one with the brass is the one you want. I warm my engines up real good, usually take it for a run first…. I love that it has the reverse switch. Pump the engine oil into the bucket, the. Pump it into my transfer container.

it’s cheaper than this, I think I paid $208 a couple years ago

That looks just like mine, except the hose coming off the pump is larger on that one. Just think of all the time I could have saved "back then" ;-)

I did find it interesting on the reverse system for the CATs the one guy I watched used a sacrificial quart of oil to clean out the lines before pumping new oil back in. I would not have thought to do that.

I have used the sacrificial quart of oil method to purge the pump head and lines of old oil on the Reverso pump on my 450DA for years because I bought oil in 5 gal pails and pumped new oil in after pumping the oil oil out.

And, here is a tip for you reversible Jabsco bucket pump owners:

I also use a Jabsco bucket pump to change the fluid in my transmissions. If you use the reversing ability, be sure you have a replacement impeller with you when you reverse the pump. Reversing the pump forces the impeller to change directions in the housing and it frequently peels the blades off the old impeller and can leave you half done with an oil change and a pump that will not pick up oil due to missing impeller blades. A spare impeller lets you get going again by removing 3 screws and the cover plate on the end of the pump.

I was wondering about that when I read the post above on this pump, good to know.

I knew it was a matter of time that it would go out, I will order one to have on hand, thank you for the info!

CAT service returned my call today. I walked him thru the engine survey report. He said with no documented service history the aftercoolers should be replaced. He further stated CAT was having so many issues with earlier models that they now recommend cleaning at 2 years and replacement at 6 years. He said raw water is sitting in them regardless of use, which I always thought about with risers on a gas engine, it's not just when the engine is running that raw water is in them. I was writing and trying to listen at the same time, I think he said new is another $3k-5k per engine and that is what he would do.
