Tom (Bennett Marine),
I followed your instruction with filling the trim tab reservoir with transmission fluid to the proper operating level. The reservoir was real low, for it took about ½ quart. I proceeded with checking the operation of the portside trim tab first and the up/down operation worked fine. I proceeded to operate the starboard side and that is when I discovered why my reservoir was low. The fluid was leaking from the bottom of the cylinder on this side. The local dealership quoted me $250 to replace it. This sounds kind of high, for something that has a few screws holding in place and looks similar to the hydraulic cylinder for the engine hatch except on a much smaller scale. I was reading some blogs and it sounded like there are (2) O-rings that may need replacing at the top and bottom of this cylinder. I do not mind replacing it, if the cylinder is beyond repair. What is your recommendation?

Hi all,

I realize that I addressed this to Tom, but should anyone else have experienced this same problem with their trim tab cylinders I welcome your recommendations as well.

Replacing the o-rings usually fixes most leaks and can be done without removing the top of the actuator from the transom and what I would recommend trying first.

Is the boat out of the water?

If you private message me your name and address we can mail you the o-rings, and instructions no charge.

My replies may be a bit delayed as I am on vacation this week.

Tom,

I hate to be bothering you while you are out on vacation. Yes, my boat is in a lift out of the water. Hopefully, changing these o-rings is not too difficult over water. At your convenience, please send me the O-rings and instructions and I will take a look at the task. I sent you my address and name. Let me know that you have received it.

I really appreciate all of your help.
