2013 Chesapeake Bay Gathering?

Having organized two CSR gatherings in Baltimore as well as a bitching CSR raft up in Still pond in 2009, may I suggest a few things?

For these things to work SOMEONE has to take the bull by the horns and pick a spot and a date and do some organizing. These things will NOT organize themselves and cannot be organized by consensus or committee. Look at how the AC/NYC gatherings have done so well because someone takes charge.

Early decision needs to be where? If you want to cast a broad net, Solomons is the place to be. I've been involved in some bay-wide raft ups there with me coming from the top of the Bay and others coming from DC and as far south as Virginia Beach. It's a one day trip for everyone. Other wise, pick a spot in the upper bay where most of the people are anyway (spoken like a true upper bay snob).

I would do the organizing, but I don't have a boat (yet).

Good luck!

We would love to attend if possible. We do a lot of cruising with members of Bodkin Yacht Club but we are always open to meeting new friends on the Chesapeake. The most important thing is to decide where and when now as we have already made some plans that are set in stone. I am sure others folks have as well. Hope this works out. Sounds like great fun.

I totally agree with Tim that any event has to have a leader (just like any project) in order for things to move forward in organized fashion. There will always be other folks that will provide helping hands, so don't think that this is going to be very much overwhelming task.

In regards to a date and place there are few ways of doing it. The way AC Rendezvous are done (as you know) the date and place is picked and posted. All you do just say whether you can make. I take different approach and put up a spreadsheet with few choices and then we pick the dates and place based on majority of votes. Obviously, this is more work for the leading party, but this is why we starting all the planning much in advance allowing ourselves plenty of time to work out all the details.

I'm sure whatever you guys decide will work out fine. I wish I could make your rendezvous.

Good luck guys.

I agree as well. Pick your spot (Kent Narrows?) and the date and make the announcement. Those that can make it, will. Those that can't, won't. If its too far for me to boat there, I'll drive over and jump on as one of your crew for the day.

Unless anyone wants to take the lead for organizing something at Solomons, I'll get in touch with Mears and find out their availability for the weekends of 8 and 15 June, then report back.

I have to throw my vote in for Kent Narrows. (Another Upper Bay'er) 8 or 15 does not matter to me as I am on call both weekends so I'll have to get coverage one way or another...

Jim,
Not sure if you made any progress but it would nice if someone from Kent Narrows could help. I am willing to help as much as possible, let me know what I can do. As mentioned earlier, a giant raft up would be fun for another weekend.

festivus44, I hope you find your next boat I look forward to a Still Pond raft up.

Jim, I am slipped there, live in Pittsburgh. I am willing provide any assistance I can being four hours away, please pm me to discuss. Not sure if you contacted Mears yet? The Crazy Lady is still in the water and are planning to be back down on her as soon as weather and temps allow, hopefully real soon. We are rookies at boating and putting something together this big, will help as much as work allows.

Just curious. One day from VA Beach at what speed? What constitutes one day in terms of hours at the helm? For the sake of argument, I'm at the James River Bridge/mouth of the bay.

TIA.

Hi All,
So Mears Kent Narrows has availability for both weekends (June 8 and 15). Lets shoot for the Friday/Saturday of June 8. I will call Monday and set up a group under "Club Sea Ray". Pricing information is below. Additionally, I'll find out if the Boat US discount will apply. I'll report back once I have the group set up along with any instructions they provide, and then we can all call for reservations.

"We will try to keep your group as close together as possible depending on size of boats. The rate is normally $2.75 a foot, to receive a group rate which consists of 15-20 boats the amount will be $2.50/ft. If more then 20 boats the rate is $2.00/ft."

If someone wants to organize a raft up on the way out Sunday afternoon (perhaps in one of the side creeks off the Severn River, South River, Magothy, or Rhode/West River) that could be fun as well.

James

Okay so we have a block for up to 20 boats to participate for (one or both ) nights of the 7th and 8th of June departing on the 9th. Please call and make your reservation under the group "Club Sea Ray". Both Karen and Lorri are familiar with this event and can take care of us. Their number is 410-827-8888 then 1 for the Marina office.

At this point I have not reserved the main pavillion. If we want to use that for a gathering, Mears has to provide the catering and alcohol. We are allowed to gather and cook out under the pavillions at the end of each pier however.

Open to ideas for a few organized activities or a group dinner Saturday night at one of the local restaurants. Perhaps someone based out of Mears would have some recommendations? This event can be as organized or as unscripted as we collectively desire.

James

Count me in - I will call in the morning!

Also, I can help if you need it.

As to a raft up on another weekend, I would recommend going back to Conquest Beach. I spoke to the local Sherrif at length and aquapalooza got kicked out because there was an altercation and tons of trash that he and his deputies cleaned up on their own time. I think we can go back if I call and explain we are CSR - that ought to impress him. If there is interest, I'll start a thread.

Jack,
I would be interested in the raft up, Conquest Beach is a great spot.

I will call Mears tomorrow to reserve a slip for Friday and Saturday night.

Jack-
Re: me organizing from land. You're funny! Really. I'm still laughing.
Re: Conquest Beach. What about the sea nettles? You Chester River people seem to be in denial about that.
