My steering wheel is very difficult turn. Takes extra force. The MANUAL says can add fluid at the filler cap on the steering wheel. But there is no filler cap at the wheel. Not sure how the manual can be wrong. I checked the canister at the stern under the seat "hydralic fluid' and it is fairly full. An inch from the top.

Suggestions? I also noticed the horn and radio aren't working. I wouldn't think they would be on the same circuit.

Are you sure you have hydraulic steering ? Canister in the stern probably is not steering related. Nothing electrical involved with steering either. Hydraulic steering has a fill hole in the steering column.

I used to be able to turn the wheel with one finger. Now it takes all of my weight standing to turn it. Note the steering helm column pic attached and the canister in the rear labelled "power steering fluid."

Simple way to figure this out, is to see what is moving your engine. A cable or 2 hydraulic hoses back there. Your images ain't showin the big picture

I have the exact issue. Just started this afternoon. I was only aware of the reservoir under rear seat at stern. Is there a filler on the steering column?

Did you ever figure out what the problem and solution was? Have the same problem, same boat.
Thanks in advance

Is that an electric power steering pump? May be a bad pump or just a fuse if it is an electric pump. Does it make noise when trying to turn steering wheel?

Is your helm a cable steering setup or hydraulic. What is manufacturer of helm?

If your steering was a hydraulic helm, it would spin too easily and nothing would move if there was no fluid.

Kind of spitting into the wind, at this point. Some more info sure would be useful. What kind of boat, model, year, what engine(s) and more pictures.

Hope this helps!!!

Found manuals for that boat. Looks like it has electric over hydraulic steering, if yours has that fluid fill port on it.

Here is the Mercruiser page for it:

Here is a post that shows that the boat was wired wrong and doing exactly what is discussed here.

See item 9. That is your electric over hydraulic steering unit.

Hello Bill,

Thanks so much for the info, no fill port on the steering column. Does have a reservoir (see pics) it appears to be 3/4 of the way full? I don't see a fill line on the reservoir, but does have a little dip stick attached to the cap. Will be adding and hoping this solves the issue - thanks
