21 foot waves Lake Michigan near Indiana

That's a really interesting question. If you click on the link below the freighter on screen has been in the same place since before the sun came up today. They never sit still and is this not a typical spot you'd expect a freighter to be parked (in Lake Michigan just north of Grand Have pier). I assume he's avoiding going further out into the lake due to the gale warning. Staying close to port in case he has to turn back around?

There's certainly a westerly component to the wind right now. Still only 3' on this side of the lake. I bet that's why this freighter is staying put. Though if it shoots around to a fully north wind he's going to be in a tight spot. I can't imagine how he'd thread the needle back into Grand Haven in 30+knot wind from the north. Yikes...

Do you watch Deadliest Catch? One of the boats was turned onto its side in last nights episode (Wild Bill). I can't imagine.

Looks like he's headed to Thunder Bay. But there are a few out there underway in the middle of the lake...

Many years ago when I had a 330 Dancer I was on the Columbia with seas straight on the bow running about 6'-8. Stoopid me, I suddenly realized I had to go beam to those seas to turn around and head home.

I was afraid of capsizing so I waited through 3 or 4 sets of waves and when I got to a space between the bigger waves I shoved the throttles forward, spun the helm and got myself turned around. Then it was just a matter of keeping ahead of the waves so I wouldn't get overrun from behind.

It's hard to imagine 8' and larger waves on a river but here's a video I have posted before showing waves in the 8' and some larger. That large wave that washed over the top of the bimini took my anchor light lens off, and that lens is about 20' above the water.

What wave height deters the big freighters (and I guess the ferry's) from going out onto the lake?
In addition to the Speer off Grand Haven, the Block is also holding off just south of Ludington. I’ve seen these guys tuck in to the lee of Grand Traverse Bay and occasionally off Charlevoix to avoid the open water. There was another one tucked up between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island, but it looks like it took off.

Yeah I just checked - Speer is still there in Grand Haven. He hasn't moved in 12+ hours. It must be "pretty bad" out there to keep a boat of that size in one place...

It must not be that bad further north if the Badger is cutting across...

The Block is on the move north again too. Really supposed to crank tomorrow from north worse than today. Would not want to be on the Badger today or tomorrow.

OK, now this is funny, from Maryland, there is not ONE post in the last 4 that is normal English. Y’all got some kind a code up there?

Those are names of freighters / vessels on the lake currently. I've decided I liked the last major wind event, before I had cameras on board. Watching her bounce around is PAINFUL.

Better throw a few more lines on! The surge must be rockin and rollin. It’s windy up at this end of the lake for sure, but it’s generally the west or northwest wind that kicks our ass!

The wind is killer! She is rockin'!

More worried about my neighbors 14' whaler he keeps tied up behind his boat then I am my boat. With my covered dinghy up on davits, I have limited visibility behind me. Sure hope it's those sailboats making all that noise...

It looks like the Speer is now 24 hours in the same spot. But she's notably swung around, stern pointed a bit east now.

Something must be wrong with her mechanical or otherwise? At 1000’ she should’ve been able to steam north in yesterday’s conditions. The Block did at 600’.

How would you like to have that Sedan Bridge? Talk about exposed...

I pulled up that feed...its Rockin!!!

She seems to be behind a rock jetty and some kind of beach, so all considered, she's just getting some wind and looks to be doing very well. I hope some good fenders on the port side!!
