240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

I'd like to replace the stereo in my 2002 240SD (so I can have built in bluetooth.etC)... will likely replace the speakers as well.

Any recommendations? I'd like to find one that has the same size circular wired remote that I have now.

I need to buy a lift for my '04 Sundeck 240 (that I will pick up on Friday). Does anyone have any recommendations (or warnings) on brands or styles I should consider? The lift will be at Lake James in NC. The water levels can have dramatic fluctuations (20 feet) so it will need to be a type that can rise and fall with the dock's floating boat slip. Thanks so much for any advise or suggestions.

We use a Hydrohoist. We have the long arm version so we can dock stern in and board from the swim platform. We love it. Perfect for floating docks. A 6000 pound lift for our boats runs about $5500 installed.

Thanks, I will look into that one. Have great Thanksgiving holiday, as well.

I also use a Hydrohoist. It attaches straight to the dock so no problems with water levels. Bit bigger boat so I went with an 8800lb lift. They wanted an extra $1000 to convert to stern in so I did not do that. Nice part about the Sundecks is they have the steps on the bow so getting on/off is not a problem going bow in if they want a premium for that. Mine was used from the rep with all new guts and pedestal. It may not be a premium if buying new.

Picked up a 2015 240 SD this winter. Been adding a few gadgets and rearranging a few things, so I thought I would make a few notes if anyone was interested. First the boat came with Mercury Smart Tow option. While reading about and trying to determine how to use, I noticed I didn't have actual Smart Tow digital gauge. After investigating I found it connected hidden behind the console. I replaced the stock speedometer with the smart tow gauge. I did order a black bezel, it had a white one which did not look good. I also did a a lot of research to find a small GPS. I ended up purchasing a Garmin Chirp 53cv. The best thing about this GPS is it fit almost perfectly into the small storage compartment that came in the console of the boat, even the screw patterns matched. I connected the GPS to the Mercury Smart Tow via nmea 2000 network so my Smart Tow gauge shows and uses GPS speed. I also added a XM satellite receiver and antenna. I was able to bring the antenna cable through the compass opening and route the wire right under the window. I installed a Yandina battery combiner, I can charge both batteries when charging is detected and disconnect them when not charging. That allows me to still use my battery switch to use each battery individually and have a backup if one were to die. I put on some Sea Choice SS fender locks, nice small size and round attachments better chance of not scratching or ripping something dragging them around the boat. I also replaced the sunpad gas shocks with 100 lb units, the 90s did not hold it up. In the future I would even try 110 or 120 lb units, but I think these would be custom ordered. See pictures in the link.

Catalyst removal on mercruiser 5.0 MPI EC in 2011 240 Sun Deck

Has any one replaced the pot metal manifolds, risers with Aluminum manifolds and Stainless Steel risers? In addition adding the Volt Max brand catalyst eliminator. If so has it been a success or an issue?

I think I've found a Stereo replacement solution that will work (I have an 02 with the XMD2 and M201 RCS remote). Apparently JVC (and Kenwood) makes a remote that you can perfectly fit into the opening for the M201 RCS.

JVC KD-X33MBS for the head unit
JVC RM-RK62M for the remote

Photo I found of an install in a similar year Sea Ray

I think I'm going to do the Magma Swim platform pedestal grill mount. It looks pretty easy - drill some holes, squirt 4200 into them and then attach with SS through bolts/washers/nuts.

Any opinions on mounting the pedestal on the left side of the swim platform vs under the ladder cover? I'm leaning towards the left side as I have small children and they'll almost certainly be swimming while I grill. However, mounting under the ladder cover avoids stubbed toes (not sure if that's even a big concern?)

That JVC system worked out quite well. The remote was almost a perfect fit (I ended up putting a gasket from the electrical section at Lowes behind it to get it to fit just right. Polk DB651s are a perfect fit replacement for the original Clarion 1602s (and sound 10x better... but then again it's not that hard to improve over dual cone speakers from 2002 :))

Hi All,

First time poster and hopeful new Sea Ray owner. I have an accepted offer on a 2006 24' Sea Ray Sundeck 240 and had the survey/compression test/sea trial done today. It went great until the very end when we hauled it and the surveyor showed me a 1" left and right "play" in the B3 outdrive. He explained that it is an issue related to the gimbal ring and would need fixing. He said there it involves taking out the engine and having it done, or a less expensive option but not the best way that involves a kit. He explained it will only get worse and could present a serious safety hazard if left unchecked.

A reputable marina around here on Long Island quoted $3500 to do the full repair. I'm still waiting to get two other estimates.

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. Do I ask seller to fix, or, ask him to knock the price of repair off, or meet in the middle. I believe(and my surveyor agreed) that I am getting the boat for a very good price(up until this was discovered).

Risers/Manifolds/Bellows/Water Pump were done in 2015. Compressions were all 170 =/- 5. It is a Mercruiser 5.0 with B3 outdrive.

Finally, is this as serious as the surveyor made it sound. My dad who has been boating for 30+ years says it must get fixed.

Thanks!

IB

Personally I'd push to have the seller repair... probably won't go over well and he will push back. At that point try to meet in middle and settle in price. If surveyor said it needs doing then take it seriously.

Hello All !!

I have purchased a used 2013 Sundeck 240. It currently does not have a chartplotter. Can anyone please recommend a chartplotter / GPS. If anyone has pictures of their current electronics, that would be appreciated.

thank you,

K-Town

Question re "tent pole" for the cover. We will be bring our new-to-us 240 Sundeck out of storage in couple weeks to keep it at this dock from Spring until Fall. I have the canvas cover for the boat but it is missing the pole that goes in front so the cover will shed water. Does anyone know what that pole is called and where I can get one? Thanks for any thoughts or other tips.

The BassPro here sells them. Cover support pole. It is just a 3' aluminum pole with a snap on the end, bottom goes in the table socket. I added a matching snap to the center of the bow area so it stays in place if the wind blows. You could easily make your own from a stick of 3/4" PVC and a snap set. I have used one for the main cockpit as well, otherwise I get a puddle towards the stern.

I switched to a $40 cover support strap system from Overtons, overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Cover-Up-Boat-Cover-Support&i=886864
I was afraid of a snow load in winter, and though the pole would tear through. No problems with the straps.

Thanks! That Overton's idea is a good one. I will get that, too. Have a great boating season.
