Hi Folks!!

Just got a 1986 250 DA and it has two battery switches. This is a single engine 5.7 Mercruiser. In what scenario would two switches be necessary? Has a battery charger from the factory that is not now connected to any batteries, but I plan on using it if it works. Thanks!!

Welcome aboard.

If you can provide more detail, it would be helpful. Who knows, maybe one switch is DOA and a previous owner simply added a new one. Take pictures of the switches (or describe them) and make notes of where the wires/cables go/come from. Post that and we can probably help. Also how many batteries and which battery is wired to what. Otherwise, it's just guessing.

The charger is another big "if". Possibly it's disconnected because it is shot.

An OEM charger from a 1986 boat should be upgraded, regardless of if it functions or not. Charger efficiency and performance has charged a bit.

A single engine boat with dual battery banks, does not need two switches, as a single dual bank switch will do the job. However, without knowing the switch types, its hard to say how its setup to work.

Thank you all for the responses. I'll get a chance to work on it Thursday. I'll pull both from the bulkhead and check the routing. Thanks and be safe on the Holidays!
