268DA and Weekenders

Try to avoid double posting....
Unless I missed something I would say "I didn't".

In other news...
Is there a source for replacement grab rails on the bow? I have the (optional) spot light and am looking to replace a few sections of that rail starting at the spot light and possibly the couple lengths immediately behind it, starboard and port sides. The spotlight section is bent beyond my repair skills and I would like to replace what I cannot straighten out. I feel like my answer is either salvage yard or a custom rail.....

Ya I get ya on that for sure!! but they do have the option for getting pumped out which I do have hooked up. I dont like the $30 charge to get pumped out though when it was barely used for a weekend outing.

Hello all,
sorry for jumping into very tasty discussion.
I have a plan for upcoming offseason to make my 268da better.
It all starts with transporting it back to my winter home. Includes 350km + ferry. Since I don't have roadworthy trailer, I will rent it, therefore, I have to make some kind of rack to put it on. Build one from scrap material lying at the backyard. Will post update.
Would post pics, but 48kb for uploads.. really?

Hello gentlemen... So I'm planning on winterizing my boat tomorrow... was on the boat today checking a few things and it looks like my fresh water pump has took a dump on me... my freshwater pump has no number or model number on it, so i will most likely be upgrading to something new... what do you guys suggest using for a boat this size? as i will be on a hunt for one this winter season...

Had to replace mine this year. $149 Shurflo Aqua King II at West Marine. 55psi, 3gpm. A lot better than the original pump!

268 Stove Question.
I would like to change the S.S. covers under the burner elements.
I tried popping them out with no luck.
Thought id ask before renting the jack hammer.

Thank you,
The Magic Bus

Alright my fellow 268'ers I'm getting ready to start some of my stereo upgrade projects...Where are y'all hiding your AMPS? Anyone have some photos to share?

I just got a1988 Sundancer 268. Only 323 hours. I'm winterizing this Friday. I'm pretty excited to get it in the water in April in upstate NY. If the 7.4 L 454 and the alpha 1 work half as good as this boat looks, I will be very satisfied. I do have an invoice from the seller indicating milky oil in the lower unit, it's been changed and the filter seal replaced so we'll see what happens. There has to be more 268DA owners than just is four!!!

Are you sure your drive is an Alpha? That's a bit too much motor for the Alpha drive. Might be an early Bravo.

Yeah, it says right on the outdrive....I understand that the Bravo 1 didn't come out until 1989. Suggestions are to not nail it out of the hole, in other words, just try to baby it a bit. I'm more concerned about the milky oil issue. But, time will tell me. Thanks for Your interest.

Jack, I have a 1985 Cobalt CM23 that I am restoring. This is a boat I owned for 10 years from '89 to '99. the previous owner installed a built 383 Stroker Motor of undetermined horsepower. We think somewhere around 400. It originally had an Alpha drive but that was replaced by a SEI unit. On another forum I expressed my concern about this engine/outdrive set up. An employee of SEI responded stating that SEI believes their drives will handle more HP than the Merc and did not feel I would have any problems. He wasn't willing to give me a written warranty statement but he sounded pretty confident.

Be that as it may.... (kind of a weird statement) I will be applying throttle judiciously and refrain from jumping wakes or any activity that could allow the engine to run high RPMs with little to no load. But if you have problems the SEI drive could be an alternative. I have had no problems with mine.

Shawn

Hey Jack! We have twinkies! LOL

I have the same setup. The Alpha drive is original and seems to handle the HP well. The previous owner was easy on her and I am too. My out drive is original and has almost 4000 hours on it.

Love yer boat. :)

Mine are in the head, kinda takes away the shower option but I never use that anyways.

Sounds good- Looks like there are three of us, new to this site with 268's. I am sure there are lots of other 268 owners out there that don't fit in any of the current threds.
I just got a1988 268 DA. Love it. Haven't had in the water yet but it ran and idled good for me yesterday when we winterized. I managed to light the alcohol stove today and I can tell you, that is going to be a good way to heat the boat and cook. It is a bit of a truck to learn how to light the burner but I think I got it now. As for the fridge, dead.
I'm thinking something aftermarket. Got a Shifter that needs lined, was 26 degrees out when we put it in and out of gear... Not sure.... Stalled the boat a couple times when engaged. For only 323 hours hours on it, I'm hoping it is nothing serious. My 268 has 454 7.4 l coupled to an alpha one. Yep. Alpha one.

Where did everybody go?
I'm getting a lot done, ready to install a promariner 12 battery charger onboard, all bottomed up for winter but still able to get in and out. What a fun project this is so far. Anybody know anything about Shifter adjustment,?

Guys I'm kinda hijacking this thread but I'm installing a water heater in mine this spring. I put in a 7.4L last year and I want to find out where to tap into the engine cooling circuit to plumb to the water heater.

Thanks

You will tie into a port that is on the front of the intake manifold and the other point is on the circulating pump on the fron tof the engine. You will see plugs in both of these areas, and you will need to get a nipple threaded on one end and barbed on the other to go in where you take the plugs out.

Thank you very much! I did see those plugs but I wanted to make sure they were the correct location so I wouldn't screw up the cooling circuit on the engine.
