3126 Priming Pump

I’m going to have to dig into a new pump, leaking pretty badly.

In looking at the filters, I think it you fill from the outer holes (as opposed to the center threaded hole) the fuel added should be filtered. Correct me if wrong. But if I can fill the filter almost full, that should cut down on future pump wear and tear.

Replacing the pump looks like a smelly stinky PITA. Better buy another big box of rubber gloves.

That’s the theory!
You can get a threaded PVC plug to close up the middle while you fill so fuel doesn’t get in there.
I don’t prefill them, but I saw a guy doing it a couple of years ago and he used a threaded PVC plug.

Haven’t priced OEM CAT part, but those don’t look like what is installed on my engines.

I’m usually not opposed to 3rd party parts in certain applications, but I’m a little skittish when it comes to fuel system...

Reading up on this and found a guy with similar problem on similar vintage 3126's and he was able to just replace the pump, not the whole assembly. Digging a little deeper in the online parts manual, looks like the pump is replaceable by itself for $67 from CAT. I'll confirm with them on Monday, but likely will go this route and get the o- ring while I'm at it. At least this looks like what was in the boat.

Pump replaced today...about an hour of work. Had to pull the bracket holding the throttle cables to access the hex on the pump.

Once that was out of the way, I put a bag underneath with a 3m pad inside to catch any fuel and the spring/ball. Once loosened, the spring did shoot out and the ball remained in the housing.

Reassembled and I’m back up and running with a clean bilge.

FYI...

The parts manual showed an o-ring in this assembly. I’m not sure where the o-ring was supposed to go, but I did not need nor install it. I’ll have to revisit the o-ring to see if I missed something. However, sealing is provided via a copper washer that comes with the pump assembly.

Part Numbers Ordered for future reference....

UPDATE: Please disregard. I searched it another way and got it for 70.24 plus tax.
David,

Where did you order it from for that price?
When I price it online from my local Cat dealer it comes up at a $340.39 price.

I ordered from Yancy in Austell GA. Here

I had to use the parts manual system, and you will see that the pump is in blue. if you click on that, you go another layer into the system, and thats where I found that part.

I could order for you and have them drop shipped, but I bet you can get them locally at about the same price.

Thanks Dave!
I wound up picking it up from my local Cat dealer today for 70.24 plus tax after ordering it on the Cat website.
What happened was, my boatyard guy called me earlier to say he couldn’t prime the port motor with it and the pump was leaking when he unlocked and started pumping it.
He had just splashed the boat in the travel lift spot and was going through his routine before moving it to a slip to wait for me to pick it up.
They usually start the motors after making sure the fuel valves are on and motors are primed. Then he inspects everything in the bilge for leaks of any kind, etc.. He does all of that as soon as he drops it in.
I had removed the lines from that fuel cooler back in January to to remove a raw water hose, to facilitate retrieval of an impeller keyway I dropped in to the pump housing.
It was a very cold day.
Either I told him about it back in January and he forgot, or I forget to tell him
I’m usually anal about leaving conspicuous instruction notes for things like that, but for some reason I didn’t do it this time.
My motors don’t usually need to be primed at the beginning of the season because I change the fuel filters and prime the motors just before I motor over to him in November to be hauled.
I gave him Frank W’s half throttle advance instructions over the phone today, and it fired right up for him.
I decided to pick up a replacement pump today anyway and will either replace it during the season while social distancing, or when I change the secondary filter again in late Fall.
The good news is I’m back in the water!
Hooray!!!!

Good news indeed!!

For $70 every 15-20 years...I'll use the pump. I like Frank's way, but it I can do 90% of the filling with the pump, that's less wear as and tear elsewear.

I'm polishing the boat top to bottom...that means I'm super bored. I hate polishing!!

But its looking really good!

Where’s the boat porn shots? Lol!

I did mine along the sides below the deck with my Makita, then followed with three coats of wax by hand while it was on the hard.
Then I took a day and scuffed the bottom by hand with sandpaper before bottom painting the next day.
About 7 full days of work all together over a two week period.
Lost a lot of days to rain and cold.
My back and shoulders still hurt.
Worst part is up and down the ladders while doing a few feet at a time before moving to the next section.
I’ll work on the topsides a few hours here and there on nice days while social distancing at my dock.

Wow!! Yours looks great!!! I'll get some boat porn pics today! Boat porn for everyone!!!

I pulled my back canvas off to have the snaps redone at a local shop and dropped it off yesterday. I'm putting Loxx connections on the back. I pulled all the snaps off for this buff job and will re-bed everything once complete.

I washed her top to bottom, and started buffing yesterday before having to leave for the canvas shop. I'm going to try to finish the topsides this week, then attempt to complete the hull from the rub rail to the water line in the water.

I really need to redo the striping and lettering, but were on hold for anything non essential until this is over.

I replaced the boot stripes before launch last spring.
Hoping to do the stripes along the cabin and Sundancer lettering this season.
The local sign guy has been closed down. Hoping he is able to open soon.

I’ve got the sides to where I just have to do a light polish now with my Makita Rotary, wool pad, and Presta Polish. I follow up with 3 coats of Collinite Insulator wax and/or their Liquid Boat Wax applied by hand. Both products are the same in different bottles.
I’ll start with the machine but it gets too tight in a lot of spots, so I usually wind up doing a lot of the topsides by hand with Collinite cleaner wax and then top it with their Liquid/Insulator wax. Not anywhere near as good as using the machine all over.

Lakeside Marine Canvas in Buford sure did a nice job for me on my 410...
