3126 Raw Water Pumps Issues and Questions

Well the last operation is always the hardest!!

I couldn't hold the pump gear in a way I could torque the bolts with my torque wrench and not possibly damage the gear teeth. So I consulted an automotive shop I have a lot of my major repairs done at. He pointed me to a shop with a machine shop (resurface rotors and flywheels etc).

The tech at the machine shop told me he would just run the nut down with an impact wrench and then swage the shaft thread to prevent the nut from backing off. While not technically correct procedure, I expect it will accomplish the job.

I had him finisg the job with his tools and techniques.

Anybody have any heartburn about how I reassembled these? I'm going to paint tonight. Reinstall starts tomorrow.

What the mechanics here call Gorilla Snot is really Mercruiser Perfect Seal, part # 92 34227Q02. There is a very similar Permatex gasket sealer and I suspect the Merc product is made by Permatex under private label for Mercruiser.

But, what I referred to in the earlier post was not 3M weather strip adhesive.

Pumps painted...Ready for install.

Ordered all new hose clamps for both engine water systems. That might have been the quickest $200 I've spent.
