What holds them on besides the caulk/adhesive?

It is only held on with adhesive/caulk.

Aren't these the ones several members have been looking for because they fell off? I'd remove them and re-bed them in adhesive. The caulking can look much better than what yours did if they're lined with painters tape on both sides and some care is taken doing the job.

The vent covers are glued on big mount pads with adhesive underneath and caulking should not be that visible from above. That opening also helps to channel run off water coming down the gunnel.

When I purchased my boat I requested that the vent (which was loose) be re-glued. The tech must not have known and tried filling the seam and it looked horrible. Finally after a couple of seasons I have most of the caulking out and off my non-skip there.
