380DA Floor Project

Slight delay in project as the vinyl flooring I ordered has been backordered so I decided to build new companionway steps. I never liked the original carpet, vinyl non-slip factory ones.

I found 2" thick Southern Red Oak (reclaimed barn wood) and cut/shaped etc to match old ones exactly. Currently they have a coat of epoxy to seal and then will sand before multiple coats of flooring polyurethane.

I also have some left over sand color Treadmaster that I will use to add a few anti slip strips in the tread area.

Steps finished with 2 coats of floor Urethane and installed on boat. I am waiting on some 3m acrylic 2-sided tape to install my Treadmaster non-slip strips on the steps.

I think they came out nice and with the soon to be installed new floor will really make the cabin "pop".

Have you considered using the clear grip tape strips? Skateboard shops sell it and you can get it on line too. Strips near the edge would make them non-skid and would allow you to see the wood through them.

Finally was able to install my Treadmaster anti-slip strips on the new steps. I used 3m Acrylic 2-sided tape and it went on easy. Used a small floor roller to make sure there were no air bubbles.

Flooring should be shipping soon and I am anxious to get started on floor.

Gallf1,

Is there any risk with going 1/8" through the fiberglass flooring with the 1-5/8" screws?
None...
There is one area close to the hull chine (by the sink cabinet) but no need to install screws there. I was very careful in looking under the floors as much as I could via the floor hatches and I didn’t see any screw tips protruding.

Your stairs came out fantastic. I'll be following with a similar project next year more than likely. Who thinks carpet in a boat is a good idea?!?

FINALLY....got the flooring and started today. I started on the hardest part (under cabinet/fridge) and came out to the center line. I took my time with the templates I had previously made for the plywood subfloor and tweaked as necessary to get a tight fit on the flooring against the carpet.
With carpet on both ends of the planks that takes care of the 1/4" gap they recommend for floor movement (carpet compresses easy).
Tight fit against carpet looks really finished and no need for toe molding.

looks great!

BIG Progress.....flooring all down, aluminum trim for hatches installed, cleaned up. I didnt like the vertical carpet "strip" when you step down to the aft cabin area so I tore it out and will face it with real oak and a polyurethane corner guard where it transitions from the horizontal main cabin floor to the vertical section.
Strangely enough, while a PITA, working with the aluminum trim and getting tight miter joints was the most satisfying....
Looks like a yacht now...might have to shave and wear a shirt when we go out on the boat.....

nice job!!!

FINISHED

Red Oak strips installed on the vertical surface between main and aft cabin with a custom cut red oak trim on the floor. They complement the new Red Oak companionway steps I made last month.

Project total cost was under $550 and if it wasn't for the flooring order delay, I could have knocked it out in about a month (mainly weekends).

Last project before boating season is a custom storage cabinet above the new Isotherm Stainless Fridge/Freezer.
