40 sedan bridge forum

I've never done a repower and I don't own the boot (yet) lol... I'm assuming someone on here might have done a repower on the 400 SB and could chime in. I'd be interested to know, but even if not, I'm sure taking most of the parts off the engine and then getting the blocks out would be the way to go without having to cut into anything.

I think normally, the couches are removed, the salon floor doors opened, and a boom is put in through the sliding glass doors to raise and pull them. I am sure there is some amount of disassembly in the bilge. This is what was described to me for a 44DB. I have heard of cutting a hole in the side of a motor yacht....

I have heard those stories too, but not in relation to our boat. I think what you described is the procedure. Not that it’s easy, but you don’t need to cut anything. I do think you probably need to remove the sliding door as well. But don’t quote me on that.

Removing the sliding glass doors would certainly have to happen I think just to have room to get the engine through.

If any of you with a 400 DB are blessed to have the washer/dryer on your boat would you be interested in showing(with pics or in person if local to us) how/where under the salon steps it's installed and what the brand & model number of said appliance is? Thanks.

That's why I quoted & asked him. I don't know of a problem either, but we've only had the boat for one year. He said he heard it was a problem. I am curious to see what the problem could be. I'm definitely not surprised that there could be a problem or if there is a problem for sure.
I was told there is nowhere for the hot air created by the refrigerator running to escape. Causes the refrigerator to work against itself. I was told not to expect long life out of the ref.

I can see that. Our refrigerator & freezer isn't original, it was replaced by the PO. Thanks for replying.

The cheapest way to repower is to only replace the bad 3116 with a remanned 3116.

Probably the best way is to find a pair of 350hp Cat 3126's. Caterpillar had problems getting the 3116 and 420 hp 3126's to pass whatever emissions reuirements were at the time. Both engines were dropped from the line and were replaced by the 350hp 3126 which has been a bullet proof engine.

The Cat engines can be replaced with Cat engines by removing the salon furniture and lifting the engine out via the sailing sliding door. If whomever you choose it careful and masks off the area, a Cat to Cat swap can be done with just normal clean up afterwards.

I've been talking to the rep from CAT in NC, and he's quoted $102k for the replacement of the 2 3116's with 2 3126's. I'm also getting him to quote me the C7.1, however I don't even know yet if that includes labor, but if it doesn't, then I'm not sure I'll even consider it.

I have found complete engines on some websites much cheaper than that price, but don't have any clue on the reputation of some of those sites. For example, I found C7.1's for 22k on one site that said they were new engines...

I am also looking into Cummins 6cta 450's as replacements as well, because I know the 400 had those as engine options. I'm assuming that if I go that route, I'll need new tranny's and maybe props as well. It might be better off just looking for a different boat at this point because I don't have a lot of contacts in the area, or people I know that I can talk to about what this job would actually cost. I only went to CAT first because I figured I'd start somewhere.

I replaced my fridge when it was 18 years old. I would say 15 years is a very good run for a fridge and even better considering it is in a boat. I was told those slots are to help heat escape. This always seemed reasonable.

My 2002 400 has Cummins 6CTA and the port one was removed for some wiring issues (don't ask). Both panels of the sliding door came out and the crane was used to pull the engine out thru the opening. They also had to remove the vinyl trim on the doorway. (maybe for precaution)

Does anyone happen to know if the Walker Airsep replacement filter is the CD176 and regulator filter CD180, I forgot to measure and would like to know before getting back to boat.

thanks

Do you have the straight or tapered filter? Mine is tapered or is the base the same, just different hold down lid?

Mine is straight, wasn't sure if it was 8 or 9 inch

No one her wants to share pics of the washer/dryer set up?

Looking at purchasing a new to me 400db. I have a few I am looking at. Are there any real differences between a 2000 and 2001. Both I am looking at have the cat 3126 motors.
