420/44 DB Owners Club

Alex,
Be sure to post your first experiences docking your new boat that's 10' longer and 2' wider than it's predecessor! I am curious what difference your diesels and bow thruster have on ease of docking with the greater cross-sectional area of a bridge boat.

Alex...was your new boat local to you? I recall reading your story about the 400DB. Have you picked out a name for the new boat? She looks like a beauty.

She's about 5-6hrs from me by water. So, I consider it local.

The name is still in the works. She's got the name but we're not sure if we're keeping it.

Bob,

I always had camper up on my 320 and with side wind it was interesting, but I felt very comfortable with her. I hope that this comfort level will stay with me on 420.

Congratulations and best of luck with her. I'll be joining this 42/44 club and hope to add to the discussion regarding these boats. I've had my 44 since 2006 and have much to share with anyone needing help or advice. I do 99% of all work on my boat except the more demanding mechanical repairs and other more complicated things. Some of the work I've completed includes.....

replace hot water heater (not easy)
replace both fuel tank sending units (not easy)
replace AV system, add helm TV
replaced front salon window
installed through hull underwater lights

I'm looking forward to all the posts.

Randy

Thanks Randy and welcome to the club. Looking forward to great discussions and knowledge sharing.

Beautiful ride!! She does look to be in great condition. This is going to be the longest winter ever for you.

We have just purchased a 44DA so I'll be visiting this thread often for some great ideas and motivation for mods.

We'll be dropping her in the water in mid May and taking her home along the Hudson River and Erie Canal west. I'm sure I'll be needing advice on those diesels as I have little experience with anything but gas powered.

Thanks for the thread!

Can someone help me identify which is the transmission oil filter? Is it re-usable?

I am so Glad I have all the time in the world to look for and research the 48DB I'd like for me and my Wife, it's stories like this one that make me step back, and analyze the situation, the boat and most importantly the seller and his choice of sales agent. Right now I'm dealing with what seems to be a reputable sales agent in Michigan, I know personally the original Salesperson who sold the boat brand new and I met the owner of the boat personally on a trip over to view this boat in paticular...and Still I want a marine survey done, leaving NOTHING to be unturned...It's just Good sense...
Congrats on your new 42, she's a beauty....

I can't see for the shadow, but I think # 1 is the fill port and #2 is the case vent. This thread should give you what you need:

You should have a washable suction screen and not a replaceable filter.

Frank,

Thanks for the link. By some reasons I can't find the downloadable PDF for schematics, only specsheet that has only one image and bunch of performance tables.

So, when I get to the link I see two drildown links on the page and if I type in something like ZF280 at upper middle textbox (enter part #), nothing comes up.

Does this picture show the filter you're describing?

The good news is now you know where it is. The bad news is there's a stringer that makes it difficult to get any leverage on the filter nut on both transmissions. Let me know if you discover an easy way to get them off.

Have you tried using something like a length of 3/4" PVC pipe as an extension on the rachet handle? I find it works well to get at the 35mm filter covers.

I believe it is a 35mm nut. I bought two sockets. The stbd is pretty easy and required no modification. The port however was designed by an idiot. The stringer is right in the way. My solution was to use a band saw and cut the socket down. I then welded a piece of flat stock onto the "stubby" socket, making sure it would fit in the ridiculous, small, tight, pain in the a$$ space. It works reasonbly well. I also tried a 35 mm wrench, a large crescent and so on. Not sure if my solution is the best, but it does the job. (I am going on memory on the size of the socket, could be slightly different, but you get the idea)

Robert,

That was my primary intention. If my stories help and other members, then they were worth telling.

Brian,

I'll be happy to, but I won't get to it until the weather warms up and shrinkwrap comes off.

Yes...............

Thanks Frank.

Guys,

Thanks for the ideas. Next time I'm on the boat I'll be sure to look in to it and start thinking about the way to get these filters off.

I took the Admiral to look at a neighbor's DB, and she was smitten. In looking for a suitable 42/44 candidate, I had to wonder: if buying a non-local boat and shipping via trailer, would it require the bridge to be removed for transit ? I know there's a thread somewhere about that, but I was wondering if any of you had to do that ? I think its something I would prefer to avoid...

I shipped a 2006 44 Sedan Bridge. Had to remove the arch, dash/helm, chairs, railings, throttles, smoked glass, etc. Basically everything that could be removed off of the bridge. Also had to remove the props and rudders.

Traveled fine from Lake Texoma to Houston TX. MarineMax did the disassebly and re-assembly, they are familiar with the operation. The only problem with the transport was the starboard shift lever was broken off so make sure they remove them or put them in reverse.

I'm guessing you have to factor in an extra $20K to the price to disassemble, ship and reassemble.

Can you guys share some of the parts sources you use for your 420/44s?

I'm trying to find good sources for:
-mains/generator oil and filters
-transmission oils
-impellers
-racors

Which engine oils do you guys prefer to use in your rigs? I found few links where some folks use 15W-40 Rotella T and some stay with Cummins Premium Blue. What about Onan genny?

So far I got good links for racors and impellers (MarineFilters.com and http://www.adiesel.com/sherwood-impellers.html)

Alex

I get my filters from a local Cummins truck shop, they beat any online price I've seen. They also can order filters for the genny at half the price of the Onan ones. Although I really hate going, once a year I go to Walmart and buy 15W-40 Rotella T for the mains and genny and 30W Rotella for the tranny's. I bought my impellers for the mains and the genny from Seaboard marine. Racor filters I buy in quantity from All Points Marine in Rhode Island, though I've bought engine and genny filters from them too before I found the local Cummins shop. I get my zincs, including for the mains and genny from boatzincs.com. Have fun shopping.
