420 DA Thread

A while back someone talked about changing out their muffler and it was really quiet. Does anyone remember that?...did a search but too much came up
We were anchored out this weekend and ran it a couple times and it is a bit noisy.... probably more so for the people around me.
So I was thinking it might be a good winter project

I believe it was me... I changed to a Centex muffler (double the size of original lift type). And at the same time I replaced both sides of the 2” exhaust hose and all new hose clamps. This reduced exterior sound level about 30% (per my dB meter). I believe I posted at some point the actual muffler and who I bought it from... It was only about $160.

I found your post.... did you buy the hose from them?... if so which one?... thanks for your help

Has anybody with 8.1's replaced their Engine Raw Water Intake Hoses? Mine look original and are pretty cracked. I was going to replace from the seacock to the water pump. The hose takes a route up under the engine along the stringer to the water pump. So, I was estimating 15ft per side.

Curious if anyone has already done this and happens to know the length needed. I'm getting ready to order the hose, but second guessing myself on the length required to do both engines.

Closing the loop. For those looking for the Hatch Riser Arms for the forward deck hatch, I was able to work with TaylorMade Customer Service to order both arms and associated parts for $143.23 shipped. Part numbers were:

Hatch Arm - 999580331
Attach Feet - 1172140

I'll post an update once I receive them and tackle replacement.

Any 8.1 drivers tackled this yet by chance? The diesel crowd can return to their uppity tea & crumpets. :p:D

@Jason_Peters - since you mentioned gas v diesel.

I have twin 8.1 gassers in my 420DA....and I’ll admit I was always envious of the diesel crowd.

HOWEVER that changed two Saturdays ago.

I was helping a friend of mine sea trial a 2016 Sundancer 400 with twin Cummins diesels. The diesel smell was strong enough that is was giving me a dry mouth and making his wife somewhat nauseous.

My question to the diesel owners - have you and your family just gotten used to (or built up a tolerance to) the smell? I was kind of glad to get back to my gas boat (granted a little less glad this past Monday when I paid over $900 for just over 200 gal of gas....)

I really don't notice much of any diesel odors (2005 420 DA), either fuel or exhaust. Not sure what the issue may be with that boat.

I'm looking for the part number for the raycor fuel filter elements in my 2005 DA with Cummins 6CTAs. Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks.
Paul

'05 w/480's, just picked up near Detroit late last month and then off we went for the 300 + mile trip to Toronto. Boat was essentially unused for 2 years. Fair amount of white smoke on start up Day 1 worried me greatly but Cummings Rep there performed the 600 hr and said everything checked out. After 3 days of cruising at 60 - 80 % the smoke is non-existent. Must have been cobwebs in the cylinders. Blew them out. Couldn't be happier.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t envious of the diesel crowd. But, it just wasn’t in the budget and the 8.1’s meet my needs just fine on LOTO. Maybe on the next one.

Hello 420 crowd. We recently had a deal on a 410 go south but a 2004 420 has come up with what they report as the 417PHP 6CTA’s and about 650 hours.

I’m starting to look into the motors and I’m familiar with other overpropping issues sea ray had with other models. Did the 420 suffer the same thing from the factory?

also, I don’t see the 6CTA listed with 417hp, so I’m wondering what actual engine model this would be?

nevermind, I see the spec sheet lists:
T-VD-Cummins MerCruiser® 6CTA 8.3M (T-417 hp - 321 kW) So I guess they’re still the mechanical 6CTA’s but not the “diamond” from previous years?

Over the past 7 years I have put 600+ hours on my common rail diesel engines and have absolutely never smelled diesel fumes or seen diesel exhaust.

Here are Cummings specs for the 450 and 480. Before I purchased our '05 equipped with 480's, I investigated the reported issue of damage caused by a dropped valve. According to Cummings factory experts the problem can occur but is completely avoidable simply by letting the engine(s) cool down after each use. Idling to the dock DOES NOT count.

Think of the crazy sounds a car engine makes after a trip on the highway on a hot day. Shut it down and the snap crackle pop of an engine at max temp is obvious. Well, these engines operate under a heavy loads at all times, pushing 12 to 16 tons in the DA or DB. It's like driving a fully loaded rig up hill all day long. Once docked or anchored, let them run for a few minutes in idle while you tie up or unload or stare at the moon, otherwise there's a possible risk a valve could stick inside a guide due to heat differential between materials and then on next start up, bang.

Follow that prescription and I've been assured 1,000's of hours of uneventful use. Love my 480's and the combined 2,400 lbs of torque those monsters kick out at only 1,600 rpm. Brutes.
