420 DA Thread

Tried to be a hero by doing simple stuff myself for the first time......but it ain't working out as planned.

Changed my Racors last week. Finally found the secondary filters for the 480 CE's and switched both out today. Forgot to add fuel into them before re & re. Still, STBD engine started. Stopped after a bit. Started again and pharted once or twice but then ran fine.

The Port engine, well no luck. Removed the new filter, filled it, spun it back on but not all the way. Pumped the primer button until fuel was running out of the filter then tightened the filter back on. Cranked it over numerous times trying to start it but she just won't fire up. I'm at a loss. Getting unkind looks from the Admiral. Any suggestions most welcome.

Stop at a gas station or parts store and grab a can of starting fluid. You can puff a few blasts at the air breather while someone is turning the engine over. It is not a good idea to use this method on a regular basis. We have several stubborn engines on our farm that only respond to this method after a filter change.

Sounds to me like you airlocked the fuel line. Better purge the air.

Hi all my ac pump mounted on the forward engine room bulkhead is a bit loud for guests sleeping in the aft cabin.Has anyone relocated the pump to a different location in the engine room. Thanks

Is it the pump itself, or the vibration against the bulkhead. Ours is pretty loud back there as well but not so much that I've ever wanted to relocate it. Could you remount it with a thick rubber footer to help?

Looked online for a 'how to' vid to purge the air. Going to do it tomorrow. Many thanks.

Yes it is more of a vibration.I will try to source out some type of rubber pad to dampen the vibration. Thanks for the advice

There must be something wrong because ours is silent .... I have only had one complaint from the aft and that was the fresh water pump coming on at night for the ice maker....but she didn’t want to be there any way (sons girlfriend) :)

The pump was replaced 8 months ago.It is a large pump the size of a pool pump.Mounted with screws to the engine room bulkhead.

To recap, I changed fuel filters last weekend. Stbd started after pharting for a bit. Port turns over. Won't start. Made sure my fuel filter was topped up. Tried priming the system with the pump and even cracked open the injector feeds today to hopefully purge the air that must be causing the problem. Turned it over a number of times but still not seeing any fuel escape. I would have expected quite a bit. As is usually the case, there may be something simple I'm missing. Stuck at the dock feeling dumb as an anchor.

I might have missed it ...but your manually pumping right?....it takes a while

exactly... are you sure your are primed? On my CAT you had to pump the shit out of it unitl the pressure got so much you couldn't pump. Racor valves are open?

Racor open. Fuel valve open. Loosened the filter and primed. Fuel spilled out right away. So tank to racor to primer to filter but nothing when I cracked the injector lines.

It's a conundrum

crack the line from filter to pump? at the pump

Now that I'd have to search for.

follow that line from filter to pump, sounds like your air-lock may be there. crack it and crank to get it flowing.
Going back now to try that. Thx.

So, back again. Have crack the line for the injectors and prime the lines by pumping the b-jeezzus out of it bymut to no success. In the pic there is a line leading into what I have assumed is the injector pump. If that's what you've kindly suggested I crack open, am I right the 1st nut at the end of the elbow opens counterclockwise while holding the one attached to the pump in the position it is now. Last thing I want to do is break something. Thanks for your help. Hope you might be able to illuminate me again.
