420 DA Thread

Just checked and it worked for me. Alternatively, go to www.searay.com, click on the 'Owners' tab at the top right and it takes you to the page. The link for the parts manual is at the bottom left.

Thanks Guys! I owe you beers :)

I can't believe I didn't know that was there and if you look in my signature it's not like I just got into the Sea Ray world!! DOH!

ha ... which is why this forum is so valuable.

p.s. I only drink quarts! :)

More than likely the same. The issue comes in with the part number.....the part number is specific to SR only. No one else uses that number. However, not hard to find one in this case I imagine. Locating the thing in the boat and gaining access is the pain. I will say that this boat has more access panels cut out than my 44DB did. Looking at the master head, the vent fan has just about got to be or at least accessed by removing the medicine cabinet. I will get there sooner or later....

Hello all, I am trying to find out what is a realistic price on replacing the cockpit vinyl in our boats. I just got a price of $4200 from a lady that I know does good work, but I have no idea if that is a good price or not. Anybody out there done the job recently and remember what they paid? Thanks, Channing
On my 380, paid $3200 to redo everything in the cockpit including side panels. The captains seat has 57 panels to it. Haven’t installed yet, but here are some pics

44 DA crew... Any insight in how this boat runs with the QSC500 package? Wife and I are looking to delay live-aboard plans by a year or two as she gets a new business up and running and looking at a 44DA as an interim boat. Any cruise rpm/speed/fuel burn numbers? Don't have time to read this massive thread at the moment so any thing specific to the 44 I need to keep in mind? Used to the QSC package as have had the 540 and 600 variant. Thanks and Merry Christmas

I have a punch list and this is on there. I also need to find the distribution box for the MSR AC as I have no air coming from the vent in the master head. I have a piece of duct work off somewhere. I have emailed SR asking how to access the vent fan, but no answer yet. Alex pulled the medicine cabinet out to get to his. I remember now because I had the drawing of how to do it and sent it to him....thanks!

Bennett

We had a our family Christmas yesterday and the wife wanted to go to the boat this afternoon and do a few things. Among other things, I decided to look for the master head vent fan. I found it...open the center mirror door on the medicine cabinet and removed the two screws from the access panel in the back of the cabinet. There it is mounted to the port side of the hull. I do not see anyway to get it out or back in without removing the medicine cabinet.....that is a project for another day....

Very happy with ours. Plenty of power cruising and exceptional around the docks (our doesn’t have a thruster). Seems to get between .6 an .7 mpg anywhere above 12 knots. Whether doing 15 or 25 kits, MPG is always right around that range... Good luck!

A dockmate bought an '06 44DA with the QSC500's in April, and we cruised with them quite a bit this past summer. This was their first summer with a larger cruiser, and he'd check-in quite often while running and we were running almost identical numbers (RPM/MPH/load%/throttle%, etc) despite our 48DA being larger, heavier, and having the dinghy on the platform. Not sure what their fuel burn was as they didn't get their non-working fuel gauges sorted out until just before haul out. Hopefully someone with a 44DA can answer that question for you.

Thanks Tom, I'd like to keep the 48 but it might make more sense to down size for a couple years. What was your overall impression of the 48 vs the 44? How much smaller does it feel? Any other feedback in comparing the two models?

Understood Zach. Without writing a book I'd say the 44DA is a great handling boat after spending time at the helm of each, however it feels much smaller as you might expect as our 48DA is taller, has more overall length, and even though they both have a beam spec'd at 14' 8" the 48DA feels noticeably wider than the 44DA to me.

It's hard for me to compare the two boats as the layouts are so different. I believe the area they may be the closest is the master stateroom/head/shower layout as they are so similar with the 48DA being larger in those areas.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Tom any further insight would be great. I believe the beam on the 44 is 14'. Looking at options to keep the 48 as well. We really like the boat. In our long term goal of having portable jobs/live aboard cruising the wife as me at least open to an extra year or two of a land home while she gets her business up and going. If you had to move on to a 44 would would be some of your biggest challenges? We owned a 40 for a couple years and liked that boat so we have an idea of the layout.

my list going from a 48 to 44 as a live aboard for more than a couple weeks:
Clothes storage
Fridge space
Comfort of the only couch
No washer dryer
I would need a camper top
Hydraulic swim platform if the 44 didn’t have one
Those are the big ones

You are absolutely correct Zach, and I should have put my glasses on when I looked up the specs. No wonder it seems narrower. We had an '01 410DA which is very similar in size to the 420/44DA. Now don't get me wrong, the 44DA is a huge upgrade to the 410DA with the hardtop, cockpit a/c, reconfigured saloon/galley, and hull side windows which virtually eliminate the infamous dancer cave feeling...not to mention it's just got beautiful lines.

I think the biggest challenges for us in downsizing after having the 48DA now for 3 seasons would be space, and storage.
Space: We like being able to spread out between what we call the upper/lower cockpits both at the dock, and while cruising with a group onboard. How large the galley/saloon area is. Having a separate more private area for overnight guests.
Storage: What we refer to as the "basement" storage areas work great for us. I also really like being able to move around, and access everything more easily in the engine room as well.

I'm sure we could adapt if needed, and don't need to keep anywhere near the amount of provisions, wife's shoes/clothes (don't get me started), spare parts, tools, lines, fenders, cleaning supplies, etc onboard, but since we have the room...why not? We actually still have empty cabinets as hard as that may be to believe.

All great points Blueone! We typically stay on ours every weekend during the season Wednesday or Thursday thru Sunday, and then try to take at least three 2 week extended cruises over the summer. This winter has been so long already that I forgot how spoiled we are.

Tom,

Thanks for the notes. We are really familiar with the Cummins QSC series engines so this might be a good fit for us. Next month or two will give me a bit more clarity and what direction we need to go.. mid 30's not kids and trying to sort out what in the world we want to do.

The replacement Imtra rope light came in from Sailor Sams so I was able to finish the replacement project I started here:

http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/420-da-thread.1273/page-149#post-1185985

pic1.png - 1) I crimped West Marine Nylon fully insulated disconnects to mate up with the existing wiring.
IMG_8383.JPG - 2) You have to make sure the polarity is correct. Big improvement in brightness to the old one (which was almost entirely burned out).
IMG_8385.JPG - 3) The old one was stapled in place. This one I used rope light clips which I screwed into the wood. Here is it installed but before I screwed the valence back on to the bed.

Thanks again @Blueone for all your help!

I ran a 2006 44DA with QSC 500 for 4 years and now have a 2009 48DA. Both boats run great but the space/layout is noticeably different. The 44 ran 30-31mph at 75/76% load burning 38gph with 4 blade Acme props. I had a hydraulic platform with a dinghy (20hp four-stroke) which would slow it down a bit. Good handling boat in the harbor but not as good as the 48 (smaller prop diameter probably playing a role). I have a lot of performance data if you decide to move to the 44.
