420 DA Thread

Thanks Blue, 80% of the time is just two of us and a medium sized dog. I have a 40ft slip that I can go 42' OAL and I will do a hydraulic swim platform for a dinghy so I'm pretty much stuck at this point. How is the cruise & top speed on her?

If your limit of 42'OAL is strictly enforced then the boats you're looking at with a hyd lift will all be to long.

Its loosely enforced I'm told, but I'd still do something that was hydraulic for the dinghy, even if I made it just a small 2ft lift.

When I looked to move up I wanted diesel and a hardtop. After comparing the 39-40 and 42-44DA I felt the larger boat was worth spending more. I cruise around 25mph @ 1mpg, wot is about 36mph.

I'd go along with gas in this size boats if your on inland water, if on the Great Lakes or oceans I'd stick with diesels if your going to put some miles on it, and for resale purposes

Yeah we are on the coast of Ct, we do Block Island, Martha's Vineyard, Long Island and all her facets and ports. We have some big water for sure.

I have an '05 420 and love the boat. she is a gasser and for us on the Ohio River is just fine, would i rather have diesels - absolutely!!! The cost difference just didnt make sense for us and the bristol vessel we found locally was a good fit! With big water diesel is the way to go as others have stated, but we love our 420 !!

This is our story to a tee. Except it’s a 390..and Ohio River :D

I have a lift on my 05 420 and it will NOT go in my 16X48 and clear the drip line on the dock roof. I have the diesels and agree if you can swing the dollars do it.

John,

The 42 is 45 LOA, with my platform I am 49’++ LOA

Hi Larry, WOW!!! 49? Yeah that's not gonna work for me in my current slip. So it looks like I'm looking at a 390 or the 420 and no lift OR look at a new slip.

The 2003-2005 420 and 2006+ 44 are the exact same hull, both just shy of 45' LOA without a hydraulic platform.

We compared 390/40 vs 420/44 as well. For me I wanted the diesel and finding a 390/40 with diesels is just as hard as finding a 420/44 in the northeast with Gas. In the northeast I would go gas on the 390/40, and diesel on the 420/44. Either way get the hardtop.

Biggest different feature for us (besides the size) between the two was an actual door to aft cabin vs a sliding drape. After having the 44 having two heads is very nice as well.

John,
For those trips to the Bermuda triangle ( blk isle ) u want diesels . U got stuck in some snot those diesels will never disappoint. Since u have been to blk u know what I'm saying ... Gorgeous one minute... All hell the next .

When I got my 420DA I expected the rough water improvements that came with increased size and weight. The big surprise for me was the diesel performance. Being able to maintain a fairly consistent speed instead of being pulled down 5mph and recovering on every wave sure helps when trying to sync better with the conditions. You still might have a rough ride but the ability to bury the tabs, back down on speed, and keep the boat in the water most of the time is awesome.

Noob question alert! What direction do our props rotate in?
Edit: This diagram shows prop rotation in forward gear.

You didn't ask this but if you don't know it'll be a help to you. The effect of only the strbd drive in forward would be moving the stern to strbd, in reverse it would pull stern to port. Port forward alone would pull the stern to port and in reverse to strbd. It's helpful to know this when jockying around trying to position your boat where you want it.

Has anyone had to replace the freezer on a 42DA? Having a hard time finding exact replacement, not sure if there is room on bottom to cut out for a taller one.

After TONS of research I bought the Dometic CRX-65 with BLACK trim. Make sure you get it in black otherwise you'll be disappointed. Also buy the black flush-mount kit.

I cut the front wood grain panel of my old freezer to fit the new unit. I now looks almost identical to the old unit and matches the refrigerator beautifully. Also has the advantage of being convertible between a refrigerator, freezer or half-and-half.
