48 DA Owners Club

Merry Christmas everyone!

Not to be a downer on this special day, but we just got word that a second friend of ours has had a stroke at age 58 +/-. The first person was about 6 weeks ago at age 57. Today is a gift, tomorrow is unknown.

Along those lines, I may do the electronics upgrade on our 2006 Sea Ray 48 sooner rather than later. Life is too short. I am partial to Garmin, but I love what @ocgrant did with those Raymarine gs165's. The "all glass look". So my question for the Garmin crowed is what is the largest Garmin MFD (8600 series) that you can fit on the dash of the 48? Two 12" displays or will two 16" displays work?

Thanks for all that everyone does on this thread. It is only 80 days til March 15, 2022!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
I've seen a set of 16" Garmins on our boat (mine is 06' too), but my understanding is that it was [of course] a custom fit with a new dash panel - which I believe was done my technograifx (sp?). I took a quick look and I can't find the pictures - which I had saved for when I do my electronics. Obviously the 12"s fit perfect without much modification, but if you're gonna do it....go all the way.

Sad to hear about your friends… yes life is too short.

I am by no means a Garmin expert but if you call Sam at Technografics he has all the specs of both our boats and all the Garmin product. He can tell you if he can make you a panel to fit them then you just need to modify the boat like I did to get them to fit. Alnav I think may have the big Garmins installed on his already, I can’t remember.

Two 16s will fit. We did this one on a friends 48’ over the summer. Tecnografix did the panels…

I discovered that the newer Garmin 16's are the same size or just a little larger than the Raymarine 12's most of our boats came with. I didn't realize it until I got the new ones and am still kicking myself.
Fully concur with the recommendation to get Tecnografic to do layouts for you to see what is possible. Also, each Garmin has a template file on the sales or support page that can be printed out and played with on your boat.

Yea the Raymarine 16” look a little bigger.

Which units are those? The 8616's? That's pretty cool!

yeah, those are 8616s. They look great. I have the 1242’s in my 44’. The 16’s are so much nicer, but would’ve required eliminating the analog smartcraft gauges in my dash. Didn’t want to do that as I still like the OEM ‘traditional’ look….

Thanks for the helm pictures guys. @Chief Ed how do the sun covers fit on with the mfd's with the flush installation?

Happy New Year!

Spent the day recovering, watching football, and spending money online like a drunken sailor! Getting ready for Spring Commissioning 2022. I'm going to change out my raw water pump impellers as I don't have a definitive date as to when they were last changed. If they are in good shape, they will go into the spares box.

Does anyone have a good source for raw water impellers for our 48's? I have been buying Sherwood impellers for my 420 from Marine Pump Direct for the past five years. A two (2) pack of impellers (17000K), with shipping was like $95. I sourced the Sherwood 26000K model for the 48 at a two-pack price of $253 (including shipping). That is a crazy bump in price for what just seems like going from a keyed impeller to a splined impeller.

Are they available cheaper?

Jaybeaux,

The cost for impellers are $125 each. I changed over to the Seaboard marine impellers (pic below) they come with an extractor tool and it makes it very easy to remove. I change mine every two/three years based on condition. I also pull mine out during the winterization process and this prolongs its useful life. I have to replace one prematurely this Spring because the Starboard side has some vain damage, must have pick something up that nicked up a section of the veins.

Are there any other gaskets or seals required to change out when you do the Impellers?

A lesson learned - Count the splines on your pump. At least for the QSM11 there are two pumps; the early pump has 14 splines (Sherwood 18000K) and the later pumps have 10 splines (Sherwood 29000K). You mentioned 17000K and 26000K which keyed me. I had a pump replaced so I have to carry both impellers as spares.
