48 DA Owners Club

ok guys...

Wifey wants to know about the washer/dryer. Surveyor said don't use it they all leak and suck. This one has never been used, brand new. Worth keeping or take it out and gain storage?

Ours works fine, and we use it for small loads when cruising if laundry facilities aren't available. My wife calls it the wrinkle master 2000, as you apparently need to take items out to hang dry before they're completely dry.

Ok Survey went well for the most part. The typical stuff that when a boat doesn't get used stops working on a boat. Now the engines with 650 hours is my biggest concern. This boat has been a taxi on the ICW for the past few years never entering the ocean. So probably last 200+ hours have been at idle.

Aftercoolers never serviced
Heat exchangers never serviced
Turbos leaking between some seal in the turbo

Oil samples taken and should get results next week.

Now even though i can do all that myself, when I buy a new boat I want to use it not spend a month working on it. Any idea what I can expect to spend on this to have these items above serviced? Waiting on the final survey results next week but want to get an idea of what I am looking at.

Next, surveyor said one of the port side "three windows" is showing signs of being "loose" Nothing is leaking as we checked it but he says they need to be resealed to prevent from poping out. Any idea on the cost of this repair?

Looking forward to hear from you all...

The side hull windows will need attention. If one pops out, and they do, it can ruin your day.

A few years ago we were traveling with a 48 DA and they radioed a window was missing! Covered with duct tape and pillows, interior stayed mostly dry even though we were driving into 20-25 kt headwind in the middle of Lake Erie. Bought more tape at next port and finished the trip.

Turns out the early models had glued on windows but there is or was a mod kit available that uses thru bolted frames. You can tell the difference just looking at them, the bolted frames are wider than the glued ones.

Otherwise a great boat, always enjoy being aboard a 48DA.

Ours is under the galley steps in the salon, so it's out of the way. In the 48 you lose guest cabin storage. If never used, I'd sell it.

We only use it on lighter fabrics, never towels and it can be a winkle master with some items. Very handy doing longer north channel trips on the hook but would rather use a marina washer if available.

Ok guess we will leave it fir now and give her a try. Thanks

Anyone got pictures of the new version windows? I would like to see what the frames look like.

It will be hotter than white gelcoat - too hot? who knows, depends on where you are, what color you choose, and how sensitive your feet are - in south florida anything other than the factory non skid white was too hot for us with bare feet

That’s exactly what I needed. Closed on the new to us 48DA this past Thursday and gonna go with the same seadek we had on our sedan bridge.

I am looking to add some speakers so that people swimming can hear music without making it so loud in the cockpit that those folks can’t hear themselves think. Any suggestions for speaker locations? Also want to add speakers on the bow as well for the layout pads and looking for suggestions.

any other “must have upgrades” that we may want being new to the 48DA?

Just wanted t give an update on my aftercooler maintenance...one down and one to go. This was a pretty easy job considering I had to buy an entire new aftercooler as the old housing couldn't be salvaged. It did leave me with a good spare core. Well at least I'll have a spare as long as the starboard one isn't bad. Anyone that can turn a wrench can do this.

Looks great. Joining you soon. Send pics and tips on the starboard side please.

Jeffery,

what are you doing for Cummins white touch up paint? I assume you have found a solution for this as yours look perfect.

It's just rust-oleum gloss white enamel from home depot. It actually came out great.

If you have a minute, describe the prep work. Rust removal: wire brush/mechanical removal or using Ospho or similar rust converter? Did you wipe down with Acetone or other degreaser? I've read that mineral spirits leaves a residue. True? Lastly, spray paint cans or brush?

Thanks.

I used CLR for rust removal and to neutralize the rust and used a small wire brush. I then did a light sanding with 400 grit by hand. I wiped the parts down with mineral spirits and it did leave a residue but I wiped that off with a clean rag. I'd probably not use mineral spirts and would use acetone next time. I primed using a rust-oleum primer before using the rust-oleum high performance gloss white. I finished it with a rust-oleum clear. All was done with spray cans. I was actually shocked at how good it turned out.

Anyone know where I can get the uniflex water hose? I need to replace my hose from the water filter to the manifold. It's 1/2 inch.

Ok Jeffery where did you get the hose clamps with the Rubber tips? You are forcing me to step up my game. Since my last boat was a 1991 and the engine compartment was already rough I never went crazy down there. But with this one since it only has 650 hours and never molested I plan to make this one "concorse ready". Can't wait to spend some quality time in the engine compartment. Wish I had a AC down there being in Ft Lauderdale it gets fricken hot down there. Signing papers tomorrow.... In the slip this weekend!!!!

Hose clamps came from Sea Board Marine and I got the clamp ends on Amazon. Super cheap way to clean things up. I'm really anal about this stuff...lol

Any of you have experience with the port and starboard "three window" upgrade? I ordered the kit from Sea Ray which comes with new inner and outer trim rings. Just wondering if anyone here has tackled this and what to expect.
