480 DB Owners Club

Looking at starting a new project. I noticed the ER lights run off the 12v side although I have a bilge/cockpit switch on both the 120v and 12v side of my main panel. I would like to replace all ER lighting with LED strip lighting. Any thoughts on how I would go about doing this. Thanks.

I gutted the ballast out of the original fixtures and put LED tube bulbs in them. A lot brighter and not much work.
So not sure what that means by gutting the ballast out. I don't know much about electrical. I looked for replacement tubes, but could not find any.

You have to remove the ballast to run LED's in the original fixture. I'll try to find the bulbs that I used but it was a few years ago.

I did the same thing as Aaron - although mine are 24V. Took each fixture apart, removed the ballast resistors and rewired them for LEDs. Very simple and my bulbs had the instructions how to do it. I believe I got mine direct from Fulight.com. Here they are on eBay:

Hope this helps

Check through this website....http://www.m4products.com/tube-lights/

I replaced the flourescent bulbs in my salon with LED. This site has info on how to rewire. Easy job.

PS...Posted before reading to end of thread and reading techmitch's post.

Guys, Who are you using for your insurance these days? Looks like yet another carrier is pulling from the market...

Best rates around back when I was shopping for my current boat.

Hello All...

I’m going to be replacing the clarion amplifier that I assume came from the factory, with a JL audio amp. Later this week I’ll attempt to trek through my spaghetti wiring to see where the positive is coming from. It appears to be 8 gauge which will be too small for the new system.

Leading into the project i have several questions, and was wondering if anyone has already been to the other side of this one..

1. Will the positive wire on the amp lead me to a harness? If so, where can i find the other end of the harness?

2. It seems it might be easier for me to install a battery and it’s own charger under the bridge console, than to run a million feet of wire from the engine room. Has anyone else done this?

3. It would be ideal (but not required) to have the amp tied into the alternator still, but doing so is currently my biggest unknown since I haven’t seen all of the current wiring configuration yet.

I’m have a lot of experience with 12v wiring to include audio, but I’m hoping that I’m the last 480DB owner in the world to replace the factory audio system, and someone can shed some light of what they experienced/ came across on systems that weren’t exactly plug and play.

Thanks in advance!

New York LED Luminaries makes LED bulbs that replace fluorescent bulbs without re-wiring. Here's what I used to re-lamp my engine room with LEDs:

NYLL - 18 inch/ 18" Plug & Play LED Tube - T8 Daylight (6000K) LED lamp Directly relamps Fluorescent Bulb F15T12 and F15T8 (without rewiring or modification)

I also installed LED strips to light the bilges under each engine.
