480 DB Owners Club

Thanks QT. I think I might just go with the Yacht devices probes and save a few bucks. If I can get the EGT data thru the NMEA 2000 to the Garmin, I will be happy with that. Thanks for your help.

Mike

For those of you with QSM-11 engines, who also have installed the EGT gauges, where exactly did you install the probes on the exhaust? Do you have a picture of the probe where it is installed? I need your help, since I will only have one chance to get this right. Thanks in advance. Mike

This is looking from the inboard side of the Port engine with the turbo removed.

The only thing you will need to remove is the pipe plug where the EGT probe gets threaded into. I recommend soaking them with PB Blaster etc. in advance and
you may also need to carefully use a breaker bar to get them free. Depending on the thread size of the probe you purchase you may also need a bushing.

Sounds simple enough QT. I'll let you know how the project turns out after I get it installed. Thank you for your help. Mike

That’s what I do when I find some info that I might need to reference later. I’ve made a Word file for each boat where I store everything. I tag it with Headings and Titles and make a Table of Contents so I can find it all again. I’m at about 400 pages for this boat.

Ha - thats exactly what I'm doing with many of these posts!!
How much for a copy???? :)

Any of you cat 3196 guys have any numbers? I had my props done and I am wondering if I need any cup taken out. I am barely reaching max WOT of 2300 and I used to get about 2325ish. Also my Load at 1800rpm is 82% but my math says that should be 1886rpm. So I think I need to do something with my props. Any help would be great.

MQuiet - here's the data from my sea trial of CAT3196s. Super clean bottom. Note the engine does have an elevated blowby issue and needed aftercoolers at this time, but hopefully this helps a bit!

Helm Instrument Cover / Canvas
Hey, I realize this is a long shot, but has anyone had a helm canvas cover made (2004 480DB) they were happy with and the shop may still have the measurements? In other words, a shop that could make one without having to come measure because they already have a pattern. Thanks

Sorry WDR, when we got our 480DB (5 years ago), the helm cover was already in place. I am pretty sure the previous owner had it made when he had the bridge enclosure replaced.

Call Sea Ray. They may have the measurements on file and send them to you. Longshot, but you never know.

New to the forum but I have been lurking out here for a while learning about the 480 Sedan Bridge. My hope is in the next 12 to 18 months to pull the trigger on a used 480. Have been looking and trying to convince the wife, (advice appreciated) so still more research and cajoling to be done. But while I'm looking, I thought get input from this group on some questions we have and advice on things to look for.

How we will use the boat-
Mostly in the Florida Gulf. We have a place in Destin and plan on keeping there, (or the general area) and take short trips to Pcola, Gulf Shores and such to start. Eventually branch out and take longer trips to Naples and the Keys. MAYBE even skip over to the Bahamas.... WAY down the road! Kids are gone but they will visit the boat occasionally so 95% of the time just me, the wife and Chuck the mutt.

Current Boat-
2019 Cobalt R7. Love it but looking for more of a weekend/ live aboard. I have owned larger boats, mostly center consoles, but looking forward to getting something we can stay on.

Questions-
1) Engines- I have a lot of experiences with Cummins, Cat's and Detroit's in truck applications, (note my name) but NONE with MAN or diesel Volvo's. From what I have read on the forum, my takeaway is annual and other maintenance can be more pricey on the MAN than others. True? And if so, why?? Horse power preferred for optimal fuel efficiency?
2) Bow and Stern Thrusts? I have ZERO experience with these but some with twin engines and docking. I understand the concept but are both bow and stern necessary? I notice most 480's I've looked at only have bow. Seems to me both would be sweet.
3) I have read about some having a "maintenance plan"..?? Is this similar to an extended warranty?
4) SeaTow or TowBoatus? I see the cost is about the same but I also hear service and response time can vary WIDELY depending on your area. In Destin I see more TowBoat than SeaTow so just wondering what, if any, are the pros/ cons..?

I'm sure some of these questions are a little rudimentary for the group but part of the learning process for me. Appreciate any advice!

I am going to change out both the fridge and freezer this summer and need ideas on which one to buy. I have the original Marvel still in the boat and the Fridge is on its last hurrah. I have seen some posts about the Vitrifrigo 180 and understand I have to remove the doors if I use that model and the wood floor to make it fit. I am sort of wanting to keep the doors since I like the look and don't really care about the wood floor if I have to remove it. I would like to change it anyway. Who has replaced theirs and what model/brand did you use. Happy 4th from a guy who is having to work this weekend instead of being on the boat.

The thing is 30+MB even in PDF, so it's too big to email!! It is specific to the 58DB, although there are maniy "general" items.
Carter, use “Dropbox” and then they can download it.

Thanks Steve - it’s on my list - I’ve got to figure out how to do that...so many projects...so little time

Well... it turns out I can drop from this group! Thanks for the members who advised a NOOB! But my 480 purchase did not work out and I took another member's advicr and ran. I hope to see you all out there! It looks like you'll probably find me on a Beneteau Antares 13.8; a few feet shorter, a foot narrower, but something I'm looking forward to regardless!

Thanks everyone!

I hope I don't mess this up. I am new to the form and am not sure how to post things and could find instructions. Is there anyone in the greater Seattle area who might consider letting my wife and I see the inside of their boat. The Sedan Bridge sounds great, but neither of us have been able to just get inside for a few minutes to see "how it feel." Also, anyone have any thoughts about this boat for cruising the Pacific Northwest? Thanks for the consideration.

Capt. Lee - Welcome aboard!

I am sure someone in the area will chime in. A couple of comments not knowing your mission or experience.
1) Is it just you and the Admiral (wife)? A 480 is a large boat with 3 staterooms (52' OAL). If it is your first boat you may have issues with insurance and also need to get training time with a licensed Captain.
2) Searay also made a 44DB (44') and a 400 DB (40'). These have 2 staterooms and are more fuel friendly. My 400DB uses 22 GPH versus the 480DB at about 45 GPH.

That being said, the Searay sedan bridge boats are very comfortable cruisers with lots of room. The salon is wide open with lots of windows and is very airy. The main difference is the 40DB and 44DB salon is on several levels with a two step up dinette. The 480DB is on one level with a small step up to the dinette.

The 40DB or 44DB will be priced less than the 480DB also. The 480DB's are listed from the low 200K's to mid 300K range where the 40DB and 44DB will start at 100K (Gas engines) and go up from there with diesel engined boats being 25K or so higher.

Have fun shopping!

Thank you for the reply. I had a 30 foot sail boat but age has caught up with me and it is time to move onto power. I am looking to see the inside of the 400 or 42. Did I post it in the wrong spot? We are looking to purchase, probably 10 plus year old boat. Our hope is to cruise the Puget Sound and once we get some experience, there is always Alaska calling. Education will be manditory, especially docking. I have always considered myself to be a safe boater and try to minimize risks. I know we want dissels and I see prices are a bit higher here than almost anywhere else in the country. Again thank you for your imput.

Hey everyone, 2004 480DB, anyone know where the exhaust vent fan for the salon over the cook top is? and how do you get it to it? and a parts number if you know it. I've searched this thread and not seeing anything on it but I may not be doing it right. TIA for any help!
