Salon window covering… as shown in the photo, our coverings are a typical black, screen-like cover that provides some privacy and shade, lets light in and visibility out. The forward cover is aging and starting to deteriorate so we’re going to replace it. We dock facing south, into the FL sun, so I’m interested in alternative forward widow coverings that will let less light through and, by extension, not as much heat so our AC’s work less especially in the summer. Since our shore power is metered, we’d save some bucks on the monthly bill too. What’s working well for you?
Please let me know what you wind up going with. Our stern faces due south, but the FL sun beats it up all day long with the exception of a few hours.

TY,
Vince
p.s. to the guya giving me info on running the ditch... it was a great trip. Everyone aboard took turns at the helm and hangin on lines. Very nice scenery including the swimming cows. Glad we made the trip in December as most know the PSL lock is closed.

Re : Phifertex

it looks good - says that it provides 70% sun blockage. There’s a “Plus” version that represents 92% blockage. It’s also available in colors. I’ll be checking it out further and will report back with findings.

This is Phifertex. It has made the solon much more comfortable, excellent addition. Metallica Smoke https://www.sailrite.com/Phifertex-Plus-Mesh-Metallica-Smoke-54

Had a ceramic tint added to all the glass, except the slider. Blocks 70% of UV. Made a huge difference in the heat gain in the boat. May be worth looking into.

TTMott - thanks for the photos of Pfifertex. Is thst the regulat product or “Plus”? And, what is the visibility like from the inside looking out? After having a 370 Sundancer, we LOVE the outside view from the salon.

It's the standard; I included the link where I got the material. Plenty of light still gets into the boat. I would say it's like if you doubled up your pool enclosure screen at home. You can still see the trees water and people just fine.

Hey everyone. I think someone on here replac d the fridge freezer with Summit. I saw the old messag from 2017, but thought there was something newer. I'm trying to figure out what to replace my current setup and vitrofridge looks to be more issue than I want. I tried googling summit, but did not find what I am looking to replace. Anyone on here have some direction. Thanks.

I’m seriously looking at Summit also. I like the height of the drawer system better than the Vitrifrigo. We (480 owners) are limited on space getting the fridge to fit since the cook top is above the fridge. According to my best guess, there is only 33.5 inches to get the fridge installed under the cook top….and that is with the wood floor remove, which I’m replacing anyway. From what I understand the wood floor has to be removed to get the old units out, but I cannot swear to that since I have not removed mine yet.

Most of the vitrifrigo units that I have looked at are 34 inches tall. There are a few shorter, which may fit. The main hang up for me is the Vitrifrigo apparently is not self defrosting and Summit is. A Facebook post stated it does not get as cold as other units either.

The Summit brand that I’m looking at is 32 inches in height. That will make it under the cook top and have some finger room to level it up. I am leaning towards a double drawer fridge and a double drawer fridge/freezer combo. My old fridge is about shot.

I do not stand by my measurements. You will have to measure to make sure. Each boat may be a little different.

Keith, can you send me those links. I have found a double drawer freezer by Summit, but could not find a drawer ref ridge or a drawer fridge/freezer combo. Thanks. Or you can hit me on Facebook on our 480 group. -Matthew

Bridge canvas replacement... the salon window covering initiative has now expanded to the much-needed replacement of our bridge canvas at the same time. The current isinglass is sufficiently deteriorated (fogged) that I consider it to be a safety hazard (visibility).

I've read the Isinglass vs Strataglass vs Macrolon discussions and will go with one of the latter two. Now the question now is finding a vendor. I've located:

https://www.ez2cy.com/
- and -
1998-2004 Sea Ray® 480 Sedan Bridge Factory Original (OEM) Canvas & Covers, T-Topless™ Folding T-Tops, Shade Kit, TTopCover, T-Top Curtains, Bimini-Tops and Boat-Covers by RNR-Marine™

The one just above (rnr-marine) also offers a Pfifertex windshield cover as discussed recently in this thread.

I would appreciate other owner's advice or experience with the above or other bridge canvas vendors you've had good or bad experiences with.

Aside from the vendor issues, what are the gotcha's to watch for with a canvas replacement?

Thanks!!

I think the gotcha is to verify the snap patterns are the same as most people use a custom shop for isenglass. I would recommend 60 mil for the forward corners and 40mil for the front if you want to fold the front window out of the way to get more air into the bridge. The rest would also be 60 mil based on my experience. But design and thickness is a very individual decision.

I’m a fan of “O’sea” Sailrite sells it and it is more resistant to sunscreen and other chemical products. Read. Then the sailrite website.

Canvas.... There are several custom shops in S. Florida but I was attracted by the above noted vendors having products specific to the 480 Sedan Bridge and wanted to seek feedback on them first. I've not had custom canvas made before and the 480's bridge looks like a complex undertaking so experience might count. OTOH, projects like the 480's canvas/glass are what custom shops do so I will get quotes from recommended local firms too.

Mine was done by a local vendor. Just make sure you see some of their previous work, better chance you will like the results.

Hi Brent,

Boatswain's Locker in Jacksonville, Fl, did my 480DB bridge enclosure all the way around with Makrolon. They did the 480DB OEM enclosures when Sea Ray was building our boats, so they're really good. I love the Makrolon, but I'm not sure I'd want to install the panels myself. My boat is in Jacksonville so Boatswain's Locker installed them.

You are correct. I could not find a fridge/freezer combo either, which I thought I had when researching them. Even though a post on Facebook slammed the vitrifrigo units, I ordered them after talking to two guys in my marina who have them and are very pleased. In fact they have no issues with the Vitrifrigo models.

Matthew, I sorry for the delayed response. Life is overly busy right now and I have not kept up with boat topics.

Keith

Keith, let me know how the install goes. I guess the drawer style fridge handles can be an issue because of the bar drawers which com out perpendicular to them (they hit?). Thanks.

I will let you know. It will be spring before I will have time to get them installed. A former 480 owner on here named Cherrman installed them on his boat years ago. He has since sold his boat but I talked to him several times about the units and he never mentioned the drawers hitting the handles of the fridge. He loved them and said he researched a lot before buying Vitrifrigo. He said with our tight height space, we are limited.

I know Chris well. He is a good friend. Agree he never mentioned the handles. We shall see.
