    Hello all,
I am currently without a boat and in the market for a early 2000ish 480 Sedan Bridge to boat on Lake Travis Texas. Having a tuff time accepting the transport costs but willing to do so for the right boat. Also looking for a fresh water version or super clean well maintained salt water boat. Anybody in the great lakes area thinking about selling?

Not selling ours, but there are a few listed in our area. 1 is listed by Temptation Yacht Sales and Paul is a great guy to work with. I think I saw another listed on Lake Michigan.

The actual transport costs are likely very reasonable. The tear down/put back together is what will cost. Then there is the worry that when put back together, everything doesn't work. Some have used a hauler that does it all. One member here had a bad experience. I had someone prepare it for transport and then another outfit put it back together. Only one wire was out of place and the gauge lights did not work. Took 5 mins and all good.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the reply... I have seen the one with Temptation Yacht Sales online. Looks pretty clean. Quick question for you... I noticed you have the Cat 3196 motors, any issues or comments about them. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the decommissioning and commissioning is expensive. And then I hear stories about gelcoat damage as many are put together with 5200.

The cats are great. Was an issue years ago, but all have been resolved. Just need to keep aftercooler checked every couple of years, as you should with all. The DDEC with over 600hp have other issues but I'm not going to bash. I would refer you to a Detroit mechanic and ask about them. Cummings are good engines as well.

The 3196 Cats are great engines. Cummins/Cats is like a Ford/Chevy argument. One is not better than the other. Caterpillar had some issues in the mid 90's with some soft blocks, which Cat stood behind and fixed everyone of them. That problem has dogged them for years. What I have found is the people who label the Cats, have never owned them. It is always "I heard this......" As stated here and many places on this website, maintenance is the key. Get the service records. Get the survey done. Get the best boat out there for the money.....and you will enjoy it, I promise. The 480 is my favorite boat and it has timeless lines to make it look like a more modern boat.

No issues with the Cats engines. As Crime Scene noted above, I feel it a great boat and handles well. For our needs, we wanted a three stateroom layout and I am a bridge boat guy, so to me, it was perfect.

Thank you for the feedback. I completely agree with you regarding the 480 timeless lines. I too am looking for a 3 stateroom bridge boat and really like to looks and styling of this boat. Anyone have an opinion of the Cummins QSM11 "Dry" motors. I have read some opinions including Seaboard Marine. The concern is over propping and excessive heat warping the exhaust manifold and turbo base. However, propped correctly, and this motor is apparently bullet proof.
    Thanks again for the feedback.

One more question, being in the south, I am not familiar with dry storage during the winter. I am really intrigued by a few 480 DB boats that are for sale in the great lakes region. I spoke with a broker yesterday and was told it would be very unlikely to get the boat out of storage until April, even if I purchased it now with say, a $20,000 hold back until sea trial. Is this pretty typical at most dry storage facilities? Thanks

I have only had the Cummins QSM11s for 1 season but I put 120hrs on them without skipping a beat. They have 850hrs on them and as fare as the service records I received these are original manifolds. I dropped the pitch by 1.5 on the props last winter to get the fuel burn at 2000rpms to just over 20gph. This is supposed to be the sweat spot for these motors in terms of not losing too much speed and not adding too much heat to the exhaust so that they warp. So far the parts I have had to purchase are reasonably priced as well.
I would recommend them hands down. There are guys on here with a lot more hours on thier QSM11s than I have so they will probably chime in as well.

Igotaboat, yes, that is pretty typical here in the Great Lakes region. The issue is the storage facility would have to move around a bunch of boats to get to the one you are interested in, unless it was the last boat placed in the building, meaning it is closest to the big bay doors. Not sure if the broker you spoke with was from Temptation, but I can attest to how good Paul and his crew are. He helped me sell my previous boat (before buying our 480DB) and I was so pleased with the support from Temptation, that I asked him to tag along on the purchase of our 480DB as a buyers broker due to it being listed by a private seller. He took care of me and watched out for my interest and made the complete deal a joyful experience for my wife and I.
