58 Sedan Bridge Official Thread

Quick question on AC units. Is my understanding correct that forward stateroom and the bridge have self contained units. But, I was under the impression that there's also a split system (compresson in ER and evaporators in a salon and/or galley), or all of the 5 units are self contained?

12,000 BTU in VIP Stateroom
12,000 BTU in Master Stateroom
Two 16,000 BTU in Main Salon
Theses 4 are on one pump
24,000 BTU in Bridge on separate pump.

Hi there, I have the 800 MANs they’re non crm V8’s. Bought the boat last year with around 1000 hrs and had the complete cooling service done as well as injectors, water pumps and the turbos done. Survey and Work done by Demann Marine in Wilmington. Then moved the boat 1200 miles w/o issue. I think there may be some confusion on the reliability. Both the boat diesel forum and yatchforum folks as well as Demann thought they were the last great non CRM motors by MAN. They’re simpler/ mechanical version of the 900’s without all the CRM electronics issues and less hp/liter. That said I believe there was a batch of motors that had injector issues, but those should be able to be detected via records and a good surveyor. The cooling service frequency issue is a real discussion issue, but it is really an hours and water type dependent issue. Check out some of the newer CAT requirements before thinking the MANs are an puli. Lastly my understanding is the 05’s are very close in performance to the later models with the 900’s and hydraulic platform, likely a bit slower depending on loading and props. I would talk to your local MAN shop about any boat regardless. Lastly I just had a new set of VEEMs put on. No numbers as yet but will publish once I get situated up here in Chicago land.

Also, anybody know where the rod holder drains line connect to?

No idea on the drains. I’ve got to do some ER chores today, so I’ll “see what I can see”.

I have 30x33’s. The CRM 900 boats originally had 28x37’s which suffered from cavitation burns on the hubs. They were replaced by SR under warranty with the 30x33’s. Although my dockmate’s 55 with -900’s has 28x36 and we perform identically.

I have been told the Veem 29.5x35’s will make a -900 powered boat perform better, so I am interested in your numbers.

What side Veems did you put on?

Thanks Carter, had a rod holder reseated by the yard and now I see a dangling tube and not sure where it drains to.

On the props we had Teignbridge 28x34 (4 blade) but we were also WOT 2325 rpm @ full load (Fuel, water, dingy, teal) and wanted to move that to 2350 or slightly over per MAN recommendations. We put on Veem 28x30x5 (blade) Interceptors with 1.0 mm strips making an equivalent 31.5 pitch. This was the Veem recommendation. Once we get sorted here I 'll get some numbers for you.

Hey @550 DB. I’m really looking forward to hearing your numbers and experience with those props! Also, make sure you take a nice leisurely cruise up to Charlevoix one of these days!

Will do!

Charlevoix is on the bucket (maybe pail) list. Really want to get up there but it is a haul from Chicago (276 mi) with 2 x 7 YO's! That said it is top go the list on the extended vacation cruise plan, just need the time commitment from fleet command.

@550 DB it is definitely a haul! Plan it right and lots of nice stops along the way. I did it one time from Chicago to CVX in 10 hours and 45 minutes dock to dock. The 45 minutes was due to pulling into Frankfort for fuel, then back underway. You might make it faster with those new props!

Guys, keep an eye out here for highlights from my replacement of the two Salon a/c units this Wednesday and Thursday night. The pressure was on since we were leaving yesterday (Friday) on a trip. Not a hard job but one that's not without its complications. The Admiral doesn't boat without her air properly conditioned.

On standby for your post @bmac!! Lack of natural ventilation is my biggest complaint about these boats. Would love it on cool nights to be able to open the MSR portholes for fresh cool air, but without AC these boats are in big trouble on warm days and nights!

Standing by Brian! I’ll be interested in the unit P/Ns and if they work with you current SMX II Control pads.

Small drain hole in the cockpit on the 500 and 52 Sedan Bridges. I would think they are the same but maybe not?

Mine drains the same, but I have different grommet (angled pointing the drip down).

Thanks guys, I still haven't found the drains terminations if they exist, the only thing I see is the drain tubing dangling into the air intake sump, and obviously not sure this is what the factory intended.

I really appreciate the help, but I crawled, literally, into the back of the two areas and this is in the category of "tools of ignorance". On the Stb side I observed that the line passed behind the generator fuel change over panel. So I took that off and found that the tube was just dangling behind the air inlet filters that separate the engine compartment from what appears to be a separate air intake cavity with a sump. Again this sides tube was not secured to any kind of fitting just dangling into the sump. I should have taken a pic. It was the port side that I originally noticed the dangling tube after a repair and drew concern, now I wonder about both sids. I didn't even realize there was this separate compartment for the air intakes. No worries if you can't get back there as it is a torturous experience. :)
