my 270 is fwc my question (which i feel stupid asking), but when you take the rad cap off the heat exchanger should it not be filled with rad fluid, and is it just standard antifreeze nothing special.

The Heat exchanger typically has a rad pressure cap, though some systems may place the pressure cap remote to the exchanger. That will be the cavity that is filled with engine coolant, and circulates through your engine block. The coolant is whatever the engine manufacturer specs. There are anodes in the exchanger...make sure they're fresh.

Standard antifreeze comes in various types. Dex Cool for example is pink and is not comparable with green. Mixing the two types will destroy an engine. Know what you have before adding. Check ph if you use Dex Cool and change it out at five years or when ph drops to the specified level. Read the owner manual for your boat and follow those service and product instructions.
