Which 8D Battery has everyone had good experiences?

Seems like the majority of the Marine 8D Batteries are $500 each.

NAPA and Sams Club has a $250 8D?

My boat uses the (2) 8D’s to start and cover House duties. So I assume I should look for the Dual Purpose Battery.

Any lessons learned would be appreciated.

They make deep cycle 8d batteries but they are expensive. Look for one that has a 1200 cca rating and a high reserve capacity. The one for your starting would be a standard 8d and the one for the house a deep cycle not sure if I have seen a dual purpose deep cycle in an 8d and I use to work in an auto supply store and also a marine supply but doesn't mean they don't.

Lifeline. Pricey but worth it! With a newer smart charger, you'll get many years of service.

There are basically two types - pure deep cycle and dual purpose. The dual purpose will have CCA and MCA values whereas the deep cycle will not. For our boats use only the dual purpose as one battery starts the port engine and the other starts the starboard engine.

I replaced mine with Northstar AGM. They are pricey but great CCA at 1450 and high reserve capacity at 500min. I didn’t have any problems with running on Batteries on the hook for a day without the genny and I have 4 fridges running off the battery when genny isn’t on.

If you have a newer multiphase charger with an AGM setting get a quality AGM. No more checking water levels (or forgetting to check water levels). With a quality charger, the AGM batteries should last much longer than an auto part store 8D made for a truck. Lifeline, Odyssey, and NorthStar are all top quality (probably twice the price of an auto parts store 8D). The Battery Warehouse in Annapolis generally has decent prices on marine batteries.

Thanks guys... I wanted the AGM Batteries but the PO installed Wet Cells in 2013, almost 7 years old. For $250 I decided to give the Deka 908DFT a try. I am pretty sure it is the same “Hybrid“ 8D battery West Marine sells for $499.

My 24v charger finally after 15 years bit the dust. Looking at Pro Mariner 20 ProSport HD. Any one have any history with this brand/model?

It seems Pro Mariner has been suffering with some technical and quality issues lately; The electrical guy that does a lot of work around our area doesn't have much good to say about them; at least in their ProNautic line. I had a 50 amp ProNautic charger on my last boat with six AGM batteries and it did fine but the fan ran full tilt 24-7. For me, I've been moving to the Victron brand which I'm really liking their capabilities and customer support. Take a look at their Skylla-i series; However, I don't know if they are rated for use in a gasoline engine room for those that have.

Thanks, my diesel 390 MY, the chargers are in the forward bilge, about 20 ft from the batteries.
