Simrad NSS 12 EVO3. Suggestions for heading sensor to overlay radar on chart and AIS system.
Thanks for your suggestions...

I'm not familiar with Simrad, but my experience with Raymarine suggests to me that a Simrad product might be the best place to start. The Ray sensors that i've owned have, a) been temperamental, and b) needing calibration through the MFD. I do know that if the heading data is shared/distributed on a NMEA 2000 net, the source is irrelevant as long as it is accurate. Have you established a nmea2000 net? If not you should as it makes data sharing between devices a snap. I just added a Garmin GPSMap for engine display and all I had to do was plug it into the network and everything was there, engine & boat systems, navigation, AIS, depth etc.

Getting back to your original question, I have a friend who has been using a standalone digital compass to sync his really old Raymarine radar since the early 2000s. That was linked via NMEA0183 to the ray stuff. But if there is a standalone compass with nmea2000 connectivity that would work as well.

Heading sensors are tricky because they need to be calibrated. As such, your MFD needs to know how to do so. Either stick to the manufacturer of your MFD, or contact them to insure they one you are looking at can be calibrated.
