Can someone tell me the correct tightening torque for installing the hinge pins in an Alpha I drive.

I see 2 different specs. Some say 40 ft lbs and others say 105 ft lbs. When I removed them I had to use a 18" breaker
bar to get them loose so I'm thinking the 105 ft lbs is the correct number.

Please advise.

Mercruiser Service manual 14 for alpha 1 gen 2 says 100 ft lbs and to use loctite 271

To be safe, What is your drive or transom assembly serial number?

The serial # tags are long gone. It's a 1988 Alpha I Gen I,

1.47 ratio drives.
Your service manual is part number 90-12934 2 - SERVICE MANUAL #6 R/MR/ALPHA ONE from mercruiser.

I found two readings also, One said 95lb. ft where they show the photo of someone doing it, And that is not right:smt009.

In the torque specifications area it said 105-115lb.ft. And in my experience that should be right.

But the manual does say to use locquic primer t to hinge pins threads and allow to dry, Then apply loctitie Number 35 to the threads and torque down.

You can google (locquic primer t).

Hope this helps, Good luck.

Unfortunately Mercruiser makes this very unclear. Service Manual 14 (for Alpha Gen II drives) has two completely different torques, depending on what page of the manual you are on. In that manual, in section 4B. on page 12 (exploded view) and page 13 (specs) it clearly states the hinge pin should be torqued to "60 lb-ft". But then in the same service manual, same section on page 63 (with a picture) states it should be "100 lb-ft". Obviously Mercruiser really screwed up. Then some of you also stated above that in other Alpha manuals it says yet more varying torque specifications (95 and 105-115). Clearly 60, 95, 100 and 115 can't all be right. I believe you'd be safe with the 100 lb-ft (at least that is between the two huge extremes Mercruiser tells us). But it does say to use the primer and loctite as others mentioned in addition.

Interesting that this forum calls me a "new member" even though I have been a member since 2010 (over 9 years as of this posting). I wonder how many decades you need to be a member to be no longer "new"!
