I've been installing my Alpha One Gen 2 sterndrive for years but today I ran into a problem I can't figure out. With the throttle in forward and the shift shaft pointing forward I installed the drive with no problem. However when I go to shift the into neutral the throttle stops just before neutral. The throttle won't go into neutral or reverse. I noticed that the shift shaft won't stay engaged with the upper U shape shaft. Any ideas why the upper and lower shaft won't stay engaged.

Throttle cables and shifting system don't seem to be the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you separate the upper and lower sections of the drive while it was off? If so, are you sure you have the shift shaft in the lower unit turned fully clockwise while rotating the prop counter clockwise? If not, the shaft will be misaligned and you won't be able to shift the drive at all.
I know first hand, I just wasted half a day chasing down a 'shift cable' issue when I couldn't get my drive to shift after reinstalling it post water pump replacement. Turns out, I had the shaft rotated the wrong way and even though I could align the shift shaft to reinstall on boat, I couldn't budge the shifter. I had done the cable too so I went down that rabbit hole for hours until it dawned on me to check the lower and sure enough, it wasn't positioned correctly.
BTW I've been doing these drives for years and never made that mistake before. Easy mistake to make, I'll be more attentive in the future.
Worth a look.

A lot of guys pull the drive every winter. It's a cake job. Sorry I don't have anything more to add then what everybody has told you in this or your other thread. Something ain't right.

So I picked my boat up from the marina. Then install new gimble bearing and said the u-joints we're bad so I replaced those as well
. They reinstalled the drive and the water pump didn't work . So he dropped the lower unit and the water pump was packed in grease and gaskets were in wrong. So everything is all done and I also had then do the trim cylinder end caps because the drive was sticking . So 2600 later all is good . Thanks to all that replied I still don't know why he could not get the drive back on they said it went rite in. Thanks again
