Any Lake Lanier boaters on here?

I agree, it's hard to beat when it's at full pool.

We've never had the food at Fish Tales, but we've heard good things about it.

I'm getting ready for a long weekend of cruising around. Anyone up for an afternoon raft-up on Saturday? Also, does anyone happen to know if they are doing fireworks at Sunset Cove on Saturday or Sunday or both? Gotta take advantage of the wonderful 2' above full pool folks! Hope to see yall around.

Wow, what a circus it was on the lake this weekend. Lots of boat traffic, lots of folks who forgot how to operate a boat, a lot of near misses, and one hit and run.

Fun, fun

This is why I really enjoy the lake during the week and try to avoid Summer weekend boating. A little too crazy for me.

I hear Ya Doc! I cruised to Sunset Cove late Friday night as I have done for the last 2 years. Its not busy in the cove until Saturday around noon, then its like a train of boats coming in. I stayed overnight (as usual with 3 others) until about 3pm Saturday. I get a little claustrophobic with hundreds of unskilled boaters and swimmers bobbing about myself, but I enjoy the party for a bit. Talking of boaters without a clue, nobody seems to understand the new red/green buoys to create an egress in the cove. A few of us tried to explain it on 16 as requested by some but there are so many that either don't have or listen to the radio. My weekend as a whole was good but my $7k Stb. engine and refit started to overheat:smt013 so I was stuck with only my port engine. We went north and carried on our party for the rest of the weekend on a friend's dock near my slip at Gainesville Marina. After this weekend, I am starting to think of either going bigger or retreating to my blow-boat roots.

Can you explain the red green bouys? We've only been down to Sunset a couple of times, seemed like too much for me.

I know that I am new but that link does not make sense. I thought it was red, right, returning from the lake's perspective. Keeping the green to your right would mean that entering and exiting traffic would use the same path into and out of the cove.

 You guys are scaring me...... You should have this on your boat !

Went to Sunset a couple of weeks ago and went in with red on right and out with green on right. Not hard. That's kinda like that old Coast Gaurd Red Right Return rule?

Did anyone happen to see the craft that went kablooey on Sunday? Three hurt, one of them a child. Sad situation.

Was the usual mayhem up north Saturday and Sunday. The skiers were using anchored boats as ski buoys with no regard for wake whatsoever. Had to move several times to find a peaceful cove to anchor. Will not brave the crazies south at Sunset.

Time to resort back to weekday cruises. The weekends are becoming a little too sporting for me.

So y'all have water right now? I am way down river and we are at full pool as of Saturday.

We have "more than enough" water right now. We've been over full pool for several weeks and the rain just keeps coming.

Average rainfall for June is 3.5 inches and as of today we are at nearly 8 inches (already).

Hey thanks for the response in my absence, Lanier Tom. The channel markers in Sunset Cove aren't that hard to read "NOW". With that said, I saw the feeble attempt last year at planting buoys out there. They corrected it this year and it is now easy to read. "Red Right Return". They placed the "channel" buoys for their purposes now. I understand the need for ingress/egress during the busy weekends at Sunset Cove. I cross through them on a regular when the cove is not busy. But, during the busy times in Sunset Cove, it is needed to have an ingress/egress to the docks. The "channel markers" have nothing to do with depth....they have all to do with safety and ease for the boaters. I like the idea of being able to run out of Sunset quickly if need be, although I don't need the "police state" control over it. Public ridicule from the knowledgeable boaters should regulate it grossly. On a happier side, my "Honey Badger" will be there Saturday evening for the "Pirate Weekend". Hope to see yall there and feel free to raft up. I'll monitor 16 as usual. If it gets too nasty, I can always retreat to Gainesville Marina. Take care brothers.

Thought this was kind of neat - picture of Sunset Cove taken yesterday (7/28) around 5pm. sunset.JPG

Sunset Cove is a cool place. I have not heard good things about the water in there though, have you guys heard anything?

The water isn't always the cleanest and unfortunately from time to time someone drives through the cove slowly playing extremely loud music not even appropriate for me much less my 10 year old .... but there are some nice aspects to being there (access to restaurants, water park, etc.) as well.

It's for that kind of junk that we don't even go to Sunset Cove. I'm all for a party, but I have a 7 year old and 13 year old girls. When the lyrics on a passing boat include the F-bomb spoken clearly and repeatedly...that's not okay. The other "great" thing is the house boats...yes I've seen several, with stripper poles. I'm no prude, but I keep adult things for adult times and the lake is the LAST place I want my kids to associate with this kind of junk.

On another note- Is that a Cirrus? The wing looks familiar...

I couldn't agree with you more. We don't go anymore other than for either brief periods or on off days - it's just too crazy and inappropriate in there. It kinnndd of seemed for a while like the big beach docks were going to be more relaxed and all the crazy partiers could go over to the docks from last summer, but that's not always the case and you still get the occasional boat pulling through determined to play the loudest most inappropriate music possible. Very irritating. We primarily now go to other coves to tie up and relax.

Good call, yes that's a Cirrus - my buddy is a pilot and has a houseboat on the lake (not one with a stripper pole!!!).
