Anyone Visit Champlain's this summer yet? 2021

Mfd- too bad we didn’t get to meet.
Since I have been going there for 15 or so years, I saw things a little different, some good and other changes I did not like.

I arrived Wednesday and as usual we headed to fill up and they notified us they ran out of gas. We circled while they gave us our slip assignment. The wind was howling and fortunately my friends docked first (they have both bow and stern thrusters) and we’re able to be another set of hands for me when I docked since in my opinion they were understaffed with experienced dock hands.
I will agree fresh paint was evident and the grounds looked nice.

For me, moving the grills up the mountain seemed ridiculous and my cart with the food in it had to be carried up steps before even approaching the 45 degree hill to the grills.

I was swimming and noticed something foreign floating in the pool. I asked the bartender to have someone check it out with a small net. I asked discretely as it could be a small toy, but I wasn’t about to touch it to find out. After what seemed to be 20 or 30 minutes, I went back and asked if they called someone - they said it a “corporate message center so we sent the message in”. Shortly after my second inquiry a worker came and verified all was ok.

I can’t speak for the restaurant other than the steak on the menu was $55 and after paying over $8/ft I wasn't interested in eating there.

Thursday the gas pumps weren’t working and I watched a couple try to get gas for four hours. This poor couple came to fill up, and the pumps were so slow (maybe 1 gallon per five minutes) that they made them stop, move the boat to let the ferry in for some time(maybe 45 min) then pull back in and try again. They claim there was no one to help them on the island fix the pump. As the manager of my fuel dock I suggested they try to just change the filters if they were convinced it wasn’t air bound but the attendant said there was nothing he could do. My friend waited 2 hrs for a gallon of dingy gas. So, I went back to my $12 mudslide.

They removed the arcade, playground, bumper boats for the kids and the movie theater which did not effect me as this is a guys week, but the long time visitors with kids may have missed out here. There were no bands (that we heard) only a guitar player with very limited hours by the fuel pump.

There were a few shinning stars in the staff at the gas dock and bartenders. Most were new and inexperienced.

The coffee shop took my friend 45 minutes in line and he gave up on a breakfast sandwich.

We talked with the general manager and it was truly a investment they want to pay back and did not care what we thought. They clearly are looking for the clientele who will pay more for a nice looking grounds.

So at the end of all this, I’m still on the fence about retuning. It’s so expensive but I was able to meet a lot of people which I enjoy.

I scoped out boat basin their docks are nice and everyone has a floater. We will probably go there next time.

We had a great stretch at BI staying at New Harbor Boat Basin for 3 nights of our island hop around Mass/RI during the past 2 weeks. The docks are nice, staff very helpful, and the proximity to The Oar is a plus of course. We didn't use the facilities, just plugged in, hooked up water, and used the boat. The only facilities are in the basement of The Oar restaurant, so that is certainly a weak spot for the marina. We contributed a new oar for the effort, credit to Capt Steve who had the drone hover behind Capt Phil's boat 3D to capture the group:

We were at Champlain’s this past weekend. It’s still a great place to stay. The higher price seems to keep things a bit quieter, and no rafting is a major plus. Overall, a lot of improvements. The biggest down side is the new location of the BBQs, so try not to forget the ketchup. The view from the new BBQ is pretty good as it overlooks the marina.
