B3 stand (homemade)

our post gives me hope, as my drives look equally bad
Yours arent bad at all. Here are some pics of where I am at. Note my case is bad but will finish up nice. the thing is, the upper drive case is the worst on mine with the lower case not bad at all. You can be purchase the drive case for a paltry sum of $1,950. For me, thats a lot of JB filling and sanding and worth the effort even if I have to do 4 applications of JB to get it right . If you look at how to pull apart the upper drive shafts and components, it doesnt look that bad. Since my internals look good and I can smooth the case like I am doing, I think I have a winner from a cost perspective. I may or may not separate the lower gear case to inspect and deal with it. But since I dont have to fill the outer case and only sand, prime, and paint, I will likely NOT open that and leave as is. BTW -there was no water in the oil when I drained it. @89P270, I cringed when I saw those pictures! You have more patience than I. Good on you for pursuing that, and I'm glad to hear you had no water in the oil.

Did anybody use locking wheels on their dolly? I'm building a pair of them and I hate that they move when I'm working on them. I'm thinking that might be a pain when removing or adding them, but maybe the fact that they move is a good thing when installing/removing the drives?

Boatman I like it! I which I had designed mine to hold the drive by the skeg and starting with a dolly is a great idea. The point to all this is, if you plan to do any work on your drive, or even just store it during the winter, a drive stand is a must have.
Thanks but I just copied anothers here....lol.

And yeah thought about a set of locking casters. Mine rolls pretty easily

Nater,
I will probably start another thread to cover this topic separately so watch for that. I may try your suggestion on the 3M product on the other side of the first gear case I am working on as an experiment too. I'll go research it now and see about price.
