Basic Cat 3196 questions

My neighbor has a 540da with 3196 engines and they are not all mechanical. He has an ecm and has replaced one of them.

TA = turbo aftercoolers. I would bet all of the sea rays are running TA engines. I believe most if not all are also electronically controlled.

3196 runs with ECM for engine control control, diagnostics, throttle. I have throttle cables that go to a black box in the helm and then wires to the Engine. When firing up the engines Cat techs will sit with a stop watch. If an engine smokes for more that 3 minutes, they will go into the diagnostics as something is "off".
