Does having 2 batteries in parallel count as 1 Bank when looking for a new smart charger. I presently have 2 batteries in parallel for starboard starting and house (12 volts but double amps) And 1 battery by itself for Port Starting and Genny. All three are deep cycle 27 series. Just curious if a 2 bank smart charger will do the job. Will the charger treat the 2 in parallel as I bank. 1989 Sea Ray 340 Dancer.

Yes, the charger will treat that as one bank. So you could use a two bank charger. I really like the Pronautic series 3 banks chargers as a replacement for the OEM charger. I have the 1240p on my 330 (I use two banks).

Thanks very much for the reply When hooking up the leads from charger to the 2 parallel batteries can you run leads to 1 battery pos to pos and neg to neg or neg on one batt and pos on other batt. hope this makes sense. I hope to install charger up top in a visible spot as to not have to pull up floor to check operation of charger did this on another boat as it was nice to see the lights on the charger as you entered the boat.

Sorry to digress a little. Installing a new charger in my 1997 330. Current charger install has no fuses from charger to battery switches ... battery side. ProNautic 1230P says to add 40a fuse to each charge wire. Why is there not a fuse in factory install? Should I add one closer to Batt or Charger?

There were fuses on my 97 330. Trace from the charger towards the battery isolator. That is where mine were and I am pretty sure they were OEM. They were in line large fuses.

If they are in parallel it won’t matter. Pos to one of the positives and neg to one of the negatives.

do you have an isolator? If you wire direct to the batteries you will bypass the isolator.

Thinking again, it may have nothing to do with the isolator. Mine were in the line from the charger to the harness where it would go to the “hot side” of the battery switch. I just looked at the wiring diagram for the 330 though and it does not show fuses. My boat has them though. Its possible they were installed by a prior owner, but the charger was OEM when I bought the boat.

I would consider a 3-bank that allows for stacking 2 banks of leads on one large bank. This would likely move you into a class of charger with more total output, then a 2-bank. This gives you more for the 2-battery bank.

Some older chargers had set of internal fuses. User replaceable fuses on charging side and 120 v fuses right on circuit board. That is possibly a reason you dont see external, inline fuses
