HEI , MPI both a huge advancement in reliability and performance but has all the rest come with a steep price. My first boat had a Lo-K-Tor Humminbird fish finder that never let me down. By todays standard I would be told not to even take it out on the lake. When we interface the power plant with all these smart electronics and they fail what are you left with. Has the black box technology in these boats make these boats less dependable and when they do fail there's no repair just replace. Does the function get out weigh by the coolness and complication. Now my boat being a 2000 yr. model it is still in the stone ages by comparison. Please don't take this Thread as a slight to any ones modern boat it's not my intension.

I always maintain a paper log (heading off the magnetic compass and ETA off a watch) of where I am and where I am going in case the electronics go down. Also keep the paper chart book open to the area I am transiting. This has saved me on one occasion when a lose wire made the electronics go black.
Also do the maintenance by the book and the engines will not let you down.
