Bensen Windlass Replacement

Yes. Got deep sockets from buddy. Oil ok. Is it only corrosion holding the device in place now?
Can hammering cause damage?

Yeah. looks like some corrosion is part of the problem. Hitting anything with a hammer hard enough or often enough can damage it, but what choice do you have?

Agreed. Do you believe that oil applied onto shaft from the top helps? If yes, my plan is set. Thank u!

Apply it all around the base of the shaft where it disappears into the hull, and let it sit for an hour.

Thanks so much! Will post results.

If I apply on shaft, doesn’t seem like it would help get to corrosion on the bolts? I feel like I need to spray from rope cubby directly onto the threads. Picture from another SD owner that I was speaking with.

I'll ask once more. Have you removed the three nuts holding the motor to the underside of the pulpit? Forgive my frustration but I have asked this several times and each time you have told me "yes".

Yes. Nuts removed. Corrosion is referring to would be between the bolts and the housing. That’s what I now plan to address with a penetrating aerosol spray. Then I will use pry bay from below with hammer on shaft from above, hoping housing drops with minor impact and no damage. Thoughts?

Found a second solid unit At the consignment store today. So as I use the best parts of these two, is there a recommendation you have for gear oil?

I envee you guys with windlass's I have a 77 srv 240 sundancer and would love to have a windlass to haul the anchor but man they want an arm and a leg for those things. I have a large boey with a anchor pull ring that I use on my small bayliner cutty and I am going to try to use that when I finish squaring my sundancer project away. I will then pull in the slack rope by hand and store it in the anchor bay. I'm 70 and it will be good excersize.
If by chance anyone comes up with a spare windlass they are not using or needs repairs I would appreciate it if you would get ahold of me, I'm willing to pay a fair price and shipping, might save my agent orange contaminated heart a few beats. LOL

i have one that works just fine--with almost no corrosion--but it will need a new shaft. $100?

Really what brand is it? Will I be able to get a new shaft for it? Sorry for all the questions.

it's an original benson from my 1989 sea ray 300. i think you can probably find the part somewhere but i don't know where.

Do you by chance know the model I'll check it out. Thank a bunch for responding.
