So I pulled the old drive off today. I also looked at the reservoir, it had mud and water in it. Took that apart and after 3 hours had it cleaned all the way to the drive outlet. I got all the old gaskets off the gimbell which was recently installed new. (I don't understand that) I checked the alignment and it was dead on. Now here is my question. The new drive came with a package of rubber seals but the upper part of the drive already has the seals installed on it. (it is a new Bravo 3 drive). Do I install these seals on the gimbell side for a double seal set up? That does not seem right but this is my first stern drive.

No double seals!

What do you mean by gaskets? B3’s only use o-rings for seals when installing the unit.

Did you have a paper gasket present when removing the old drive? That would not be correct and could be the source of water in the bottle.

There’s a small O-ring for the oil line, a larger one for the shift cable and an odd sort of rectangular one for the water inlet.

There are 3 others in the kit for the input shaft as well.

Sorry for the confusion but yes they are the rubber seals. They came pre-installed on the upper half of the drive except for the 3 on the shaft. I also received a package which contained all the seals, even the one which were pre-installed. That is what made me question the install.

Thank you for the reply. I had never heard of anything using double seals like that but that does not mean it can’t happen. At 55 I am still learning new things and this could have been one of them.

Ok after several hours, I finally got the new drive in. To be honest, it was easier than changing the water pump on my Optimax. Although it was a lot heavier. I am waiting on the props, I took them to have them checked. Nothing appeared to be wrong with them but I just spent some money on a new drive and wanted to make sure. Thank you again for everyone’s help. I have read through just about every post and was able to learn something from a lot of them.
