Calling all canvas people....Let's have an honest discussion....

Im just beginning to delve into the canvas sewing arena, so have been checking out websites for supplies. Besides Sailrite where do you guys recommend for things like zipper, canvas, thread etc?

Sailrite is one of the bigger/better places for DIYers. Fabric shops may have some of the material but I would guess at a somewhat higher price depending on the store - although you may be able to play some of the discount games. Most of the wholesalers are not going to entertain selling to you unless you are an established business (mostly for sales tax purposes) and they are not in the business of doing small cut sales to individuals.

That all said if you watch Sailrite for their sales, the prices you will get will not be far above what we pay wholesale and in fact may sometimes be cheaper based on the distributor. I would also be happy to offer you materials and supplies but depending on the shipping costs there might not be any savings. If you are interested PM me.

I'm pretty well committed to Sailrite for all of my supplies for one reason - their videos. Their videos are invaluable and cost us nothing. I will gladly skip shopping around for zippers, snaps and Sunbrella to help fund those videos. They are wickedly helpful for a beginner like me.

Support things worth supporting with your dollars!

And for the record - I have zero connection with Sailrite. I was just the victim (in a good way) of one of their sales on the sewing machines last year :)

Agree 100% on supporting a site like Sailrite. Only thing I couldn't find on their website was #8 zippers.

I am surprised that they would not have them - I am guessing you need the Vislon Zippers - if so we can get them for you if needed and they are a relatively inexpensive item to ship as they fit easily into a USPS Priority Box. Get my info from our website and give me a call if you like.

I like supporting Sailrite as well to show appreciation for the demonstration videos which have really helped me have the confidence to do my projects. I was able to set up a commercial account with Keyston Brothers which is a national wholesale chain thru a small business that I used to own. I have a credit card on file and pay sales tax up front. When I charge for work I pass the materials thru and only charge my labor which in California for now still is not taxable. The cost saving is substantial but mostly I use them because they are local and I can go there and buy materials in person.
Carpe Diem
