In 50 years of driving cars I’ve never had the empty arm snap back on the windshield when changing wiper blades. Until today.

Comprehensive insurance if you have it should cover it with 0 deductible.

South Carolina is a no inspection state. So now I just fit in with the rest of the cars around here. I’ll wait until it grows in warmer weather next summer. Plus will give me time to collect some more 18 wheeler rock cracks.

That sucks. Can't believe that cracked that like it did.
We have full glass coverage. We drive our cars for 6 to 10 years so I usually hope for something like that after 5 years or so. Amazing what an improvement a new windshield is after 5 years of winter time road grit. And yep, NY state inspection would fail that.

I have always worried about this happening. My worst fears are now confirmed.

I have also hated replacing the wipers. I get confused. Yeah, not complicated, but I remember the ones in the 80s being a pain in the butt. So I let Advance Auto Parts do this one now. Never thought about what you experienced though. I wonder if Advance would cover it if they did it?

Yes, comprehensive insurance, if you have it, should cover, and the deductible is usually waived.

Ouch. I can relate. A couple weeks ago I was replacing the side mirror on an older car. I set the new one down on the concrete floor so I could fix an issue with the mount on the door. I heard the mirror fall over on the floor and it had broken the glass. Damn!

We've all had OSMs (Oh S4it Moment). Fortunately your insurance will likely make you whole, making a priceless lesson free.

For sure, I've had a couple. Once was backing my truck around the corner of the woodshed. I had the corner post lined up in my mirror, had plenty of room. Except somehow it wasn't the corner post I was lining up with. I was actually looking at one of the interior posts and whammo hit the corner post dead center....wrecked the tailgate and the glass topper door.

Then there's the time I was going to shoot a varmint from inside the truck. It was raining so I just rolled down the window for the shot. Had that critter lined right up in my sights, he would have been a goner but I was holding the pistol just a bit too low...or maybe the window was up a bit too high :p:rolleyes: Some poly and duct tape and I was good to go.

Working at a dealer for over a decade I’ve seen that happen and seen the aftermath. I’ll admit I’ve cracked 2 windshields, one a socket slipped and the ratchet handle tapped the inside of the windshield when I had a dash out, and that was a tiny tap. Second was a puller tool broke while pulling a wiper arm off and the arm popped up out of my hand and landed on an uncovered part of the windshield. Dumb luck because I tried to cover the work area. Both times the customers were amazingly understanding, maybe because they were not paying for the repair.

I became a member of that club while visiting my daughter at college. I was going to the be "good Dad" and make sure she had good wipers. I thought that I was going to have to take her to the hospital she was laughing so hard!

I'm ashamed to admit that I've done it too. Now I always remember to put a towel on the windshield

That really sucks, AutoZone broke mine years ago and offered instantly to pay for the replacement WS it was way low so not failing the NC inspection, took a rock 2 weeks ago right at eye level, USAA covered everything and SafeLight replaced it in my work parking lot. Sorry to hear about it.

Do that to a Porsche and you will really feel the pain. Lots of embedded electrical stuff and associated labor to replace. The glass is also expensive.

Perhaps one of my dumbest OSM was me trying to take a long piece of wood home from the hardware store inside my expedition. I put it in lengthwise with the rear seats folded down and the front of the board sitting on the dashboard on the passenger side. Went around back to close the lift gate and couldn't quite get it closed. So, I gave it a little extra shove. Heard a crack as the front of the board went into the windshield.

Only good news here is that it was the windshield I had already cracked from the windshield wiper
