Change in Oil Level

Carter thank you again for the update, it is a real comfort to hear all "MAN men" are on the same page. I don't think I waited 20 minutes after running them. I might have waited 10 but definitely not 20. I will start doing that as well.
All's Well, glad we helped avert your correction. This is a great forum!!!

The similarity is that oil checks are to be done under specific conditions, I.e. specific temperature and having been static long enough for oil to have stopped draining. The intent being consistent results. The implication of that is oil level results must vary widely during the operational cycle.
Agreed

I agree. Like having to check transmission oil a certain amount off time after shutdown to insure that oil is drained back from a cooler or not yet drained back from a cooler, depending on manufacturer.......

Now that we’ve got the engine oil level check right on V8 MAN 900’s and just to close the loop for those with these engines and associated Twin Disc transmissions, to properly check the oil level the transmission should be in neutral, at idle and at operating temperature.

100% correct sir - but what a PITA!

Bob - one last question/comment. How long had it been since you checked yours and saw they were over full? My Port engine sat 7 months and was over full, but my STBD was fine. I will check them again this weekend, prior to start, and see if mine leaked down that fast - or if it is fine. Meaning a very small, slow leak down...

Brett = all you have to do is own a Mercedes or BMW (or watch WW2 movies) and it is easily understood!!!

I haven't checked my oil for at least a week now. After I ran it last time, I went down and checked the level each day for 3 days. It took several days for it to seep by the check valve. I think it is a pretty slow process. I will check it again this weekend and see where it stands. At its worse I would say it was about 3/8 of an inch above the full notch. Interesting that it is also my port engine showing over full and the STBD is fine. Just a coincidence I am sure.

Carter, It has been a good two weeks since I checked the oil, so I checked it this morning. It was about 3/8 of an inch above the full notch on the dip stick. That seems to be the stopping point which I assume is the oil in the filters, not sure what quantity that would be in quarts or gallons. I think its a pretty slow drip past the check valve. Other engine right on the mark. Still don't like it but it is what it is for now!
