Changed the starter..now mechanic says engine is shot

It should be replace a cracked head not repair. How hard it is to get to will make a difference on time and cost. Gaskets will be about $150 labor should be from 3 - 5 hours depending. THEN ADD OIL CHANGE AND COOLANT IF NEEDED.
