Cruise from Guntersville to Chatanooga

Well, we had planned to make the run last weekend (May 3-5); however, the raining and flooded river made us cancel. Very glad we did. The river flow is 10x normal with a TON of debris floating down river. It was a good safety call to not go. We are now trying to figure out when to reschedule. It may be in the fall at this point because it will be hot soon and we may enjoy seeing the fall colors more.

I just stumbled across this old thread. I was thinking of doing this trip in September 2021. Is it about 100 miles, about 3 hrs at 32 kts? How big of a delay are the locks?

You only have one lock to make it from Guntersville to Nickajack. Check the US Army Corp of Engineers navigation notices (google search) to just make sure there are no lock repairs scheduled (unlikely but possible). Typically it is about 20 minutes to make the lock ready and 30 minutes to ride up or down. The commercial tows are the wild card. If they start locking through a commercial tow it could take 4 hours or so before they get to recreational boats. I always radio ahead when I’m about 5 miles out so I can adjust my speed to arrive without having to circle or tie to the wall.
